WWE News: The 10 Biggest Rivalries in Wrestling Right Now
We’re only eight days removed from WWE Money in the Bank, and the historic pay-per-view has left the WWE landscape in a state of flux.
The creative team spent the last month or so building up CM Punk vs. John Cena and the MITB matches, but both have since come and gone.
As a result, only a few WWE feuds have been firmly established, while most are either fading away or just starting.
Still, the WWE does appear to be moving toward (or continuing) a number of different rivalries on both Raw and Smackdown.
Some we’ve seen before, some we’re excited to see and some we’d rather not have to sit through.
But either way, here are the top 10 current rivalries in the WWE.
10. Kelly Kelly and the Divas vs. the WWE Creative Team
1 of 10OK, so we’re going to start on a lighter note here and call the ongoing disagreements between the WWE divas and the creative team a rivalry.
Why? Because it’s pretty clear that they hate each other, or at least that the creative team strongly dislikes the Divas.
Everyone knows that for years now, the Divas division has been booked like absolute crap, and that was never more evident than it was on Monday’s Raw.
Thirty seconds for a 7-on-7 match? What a joke.
I’m not sure what WWE officials seem to have against the Divas division, but when you’ve got talented female performers like Beth Phoenix, Gail Kim and Natalya, there’s no excuse for failing to build feuds the fans will care about.
9. Daniel Bryan vs. Cody Rhodes
2 of 10Daniel Bryan and Cody Rhodes have had an extended rivalry over the past couple of months, with the two Smackdown stars putting on some very good TV matches in the process.
As of late, though, their feud seems to have cooled down a bit.
Rhodes didn’t even appear in person on Friday’s Smackdown, and Bryan is now the holder of the blue brand’s Money in the Bank briefcase.
And that’s precisely why I could see the rivalry between these two picking up steam over the next summer months, with Rhodes possibly trying to take the briefcase away from Bryan.
After all, there aren’t a ton of other mid-card feud options for either guy on Smackdown, and I don’t think this feud ever really had a proper ending.
8. Randy Orton vs. Kane
3 of 10Randy Orton may currently be involved in a great World Heavyweight Championship feud with Christian, but he’s also developed a solid TV rivalry with Kane over the last couple of weeks.
Orton and Kane faced off in Smackdown’s main event for two consecutive weeks, and their most recent bout—a Street Fight—was a very good TV match.
But I’m not sure that—especially with Kane’s “injury” that will sideline him for three months—the feud, rivalry or whatever you want to call it between Kane and Orton will ever be anything more than a short-term thing.
In fact, it’s probably already over. After all, Kane will likely be off of TV for a while, and Orton’s got other guys to worry about.
Still, it’s worth noting that what’s been going on with Orton and Kane has been more entertaining than most people likely thought it would be.
7. Mark Henry vs. Kane
4 of 10The reason Kane won’t be on Smackdown for the next several weeks is because Mark Henry put him out of action with a “fractured fibula.”
But even though this feud seems to be taking a hiatus, it’s still been a lengthy one that’s had its high points.
I loved the intensity shown by the World’s Strongest Man at the conclusion of Friday’s Smackdown, and if I’m a betting man, I’d say there’s a reason that he essentially wrote Kane off of television last week.
Why? Because Kane’s been saying he longer feels like a monster, and having Henry destroy him could be a good way to get the mask back on “The Big Red Monster.”
6. Wade Barrett vs. Sheamus
5 of 10Friday Night Smackdown is pretty thin as far as main event faces go, and that has many WWE fans calling for a major shakeup on the blue brand.
And that major shakeup could be a Sheamus face turn.
By igniting a feud between the Celtic Warrior and Wade Barrett, the creative team seems to be gradually be moving Sheamus to the good side.
I actually like the move (if it happens), and I think Sheamus could be booked as a respectable face if done right.
Plus, it’s never a bad idea to have two of the blue brand’s budding stars in a heated rivalry.
5. The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio
6 of 10In the WWE Championship Tournament Finals on tonight’s Raw, former champ The Miz will take on Rey Mysterio to determine the new champ.
I’m not sure that the result of this match matters all that much, as I see Alberto Del Rio cashing in on whoever wins anyway (and then facing John Cena for the title at SummerSlam).
The Miz-Mysterio bout is likely being done to setup a feud between the two more than anything else.
After all, this would be a pretty high-profile rivalry between one of the WWE’s top heels and one of its most popular superstars.
A short feud leading up to a match at SummerSlam makes a ton of sense.
4. The Rock vs. John Cena
7 of 10We’re still about eight months away from Wrestlemania 28, when John Cena will face The Rock in an epic clash in Miami.
As a result, we haven’t seen any interaction on TV between Cena and The Rock as of late, with Cena instead participating in a great feud with CM Punk.
The exchanges between The Rock and Cena have therefore been relegated to the Internet—most notably Twitter and YouTube—and the feud actually regained some steam when The Rock posted an 11-minute YouTube video blasting Cena.
Cena’s responses have largely come on Twitter, and The Rock seems to have the leg up in this mega-rivalry.
At least for now.
3. Randy Orton vs. Christian
8 of 10Depending on what CM Punk’s WWE status is, the feud between Randy Orton and Christian likely won’t be outdone in 2011.
Captain Charisma and The Viper have done phenomenal work in every aspect of their rivalry, from promos to facial expressions to in-ring work.
And now that Christian has regained the World Heavyweight Championship, this feud will only get bigger.
I’d fully expect Christian to defend his title against Orton at SummerSlam, win that match and put that feud to rest.
Thanks, guys. It’s been fun watching you.
2. CM Punk vs. John Cena
9 of 10So, CM Punk is no longer with the WWE.
Wait, is he? Has he re-signed with the company? Is he planning to do so in the future?
I really don’t know, but based on his recent appearance at Comic Con, I’m guessing that he’s probably signed a new contract with the WWE.
That likely means that his feud with John Cena isn’t over, and I think we can all agree that that’s good for the business.
Punk/Cena has been great TV, and even if it might not happen until a few months down the road, the next chapter of this feud promises to be nothing short of phenomenal.
1. CM Punk vs. Triple H vs. Vince McMahon vs. John Cena
10 of 10No, this isn’t a Fatal Four-Way match between John Cena, Triple H, Vince McMahon and CM Punk.
I’ve just got it listed that way because I have no idea how everything that’s going on on Raw will play out. There are simply too many unanswered questions.
Has Punk re-signed with the company, or will he in the future? Will Triple H feud with Vince McMahon?
Will Cena side with McMahon or Triple H? Will Cena turn heel?
I’m completely clueless as to what’s going to happen…and I love it.
Having four of the WWE’s most prominent figures all entangled in a feud—especially one that doesn’t have an obvious conclusion—makes this the greatest current rivalry in the WWE.
