Strikeforce middleweight contender Tim Kennedy makes headlines every time he fights for being the only professional fighter to simultaneously fight and work full time in the United States Army.
Kennedy holds a record of 13-3 with seven submission victories, including submission wins over Nick Thompson, Trevor Prangley and Melvin Manhoef.
The submission of the day comes from his most recent bout against Manhoef, a Dutch-Surinamese kickboxer and MMA fighter who entered the bout with a 24-8 record, including 23 knockouts.
The 31-year-old had expressed interest in having his opponents stand up with him prior to the bout, but he had no intentions of testing those skills in this fight.
He quickly got Manhoef down halfway through the round and worked in a rear-naked choke to submit the kickboxing and Muay Thai machine 3:41 into the first round.
Kennedy is scheduled to take on Robbie Lawler on the main card of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Dan Henderson. Lawler (18-7) has a win over Manhoef but dropped his last bout to Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Ronaldo Souza, an opponent who Kennedy would like to face again.
