David Kahn: 5 Most Questionable Moves During His Tenure with Timberwolves
Minnesota Timberwolves GM David Kahn is the mad scientist of basketball GM's. Many of his experiments have failed miserably. He does a few possibly brilliant moves (Beasley trade, Getting Rubio), but the jury remains out on Kahn's tenure as General Manager.
Let's take a look at a few of the less than stellar moves that Kahn has made.
Darko "Mana from Heaven" Milicic Deal
1 of 6Signing the biggest bust in NBA history is alone enough to raise a few eyebrows. Giving him $20 million over four years raises a few more. And referring to him as "Manna from Heaven" takes the cake.
Granted, Darko has not been completely terrible during his tenure with the Wolves. David Kahn acting as if he had just signed Shaq, Moses Malone, Bill Russell, and George Mikan (and paying Darko like his talents equate to those players) makes this a boneheaded move.
Extended Firing of Kurt Rambis
2 of 6David Kahn took two months to do what any casual fan could point out, Kurt Rambis is not the right coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Kahn pulled the trigger in mid July. However, the Wolves credibility had already gone out the window.
This move damages the T-Wolves' credibility at the management level. Who wants to work for a team that leaves a coach hanging for two months?
Giving Nikola Pekovic $13 Million
3 of 6Nikola Pekovic, while a semi-talented basketball player, is being paid an absurd amount of money. The glorified Serbian enforcer was signed to a three year $13 million dollar deal. He has not amounted to much other than being known for his tattoo.
Running His Mouth
4 of 6David Kahn has not exemplified the Teddy Roosevelt quote, "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
One of the best (or worst) examples of this come on the night of the 2011 NBA draft lottery:
"This league has a habit, and I am just going to say habit, of producing some pretty incredible story lines," Kahn said. "Last year it was Abe Pollin's widow and this year it was a 14-year-old boy and the only thing we have in common is we have both been bar mitzvahed. We were done. I told Kevin: 'We're toast.' This is not happening for us and I was right."
Kahn has also remarked about Michael Beasley's drug habbits. These remarks have cost him a pretty penny.
A GM with only 32 wins shouldn't be saying this much.
Point Guard Plethora
5 of 6Perhaps the most obvious move is Kahn's insistence on drafting three point guards in the 2009 NBA Draft. Jonny Flynn, Ricky Rubio, and Ty Lawson. Lawson was traded to Denver for draft picks. Flynn will be wearing a Rockets jersey this season and Rubio remains an enigma.
Give Kahn credit for getting Rubio to come play in Minnesota, but his two headed point guard system never really panned out.
Kahn or McHale?
6 of 6Wolves fans have never had the good fortune of cheering for a well managed basketball team. Former GM Kevin McHale had at least as many boneheaded moves as David Kahn. His most notable was an under the table Joe Smith deal that cost the team five years of draft picks.
While McHale did have a few winning seasons, I'm not convinced that Kahn is doing worse than the former Celtic.
Who did better as GM, Kahn or McHale?
