Phillies Trade Rumors: Will Philadelphia Steal Show with Another Huge Move?
The fans of Philadelphia sports have been treated to a hell of a show the last few days, and it may not be over.
Not only did the Philadelphia Phillies go out of their way to trade for stellar outfielder Hunter Pence, but they may be in the market to acquire San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell.
The Phillies have got plenty of help coming off the disabled list with Brad Lidge and Ryan Madson, but a bona fide closer is never something to pass on if the price is right.
Senior Baseball Writer at CBSSports.com Danny Knobler said on twitter:
Rangers still involved on Bell, but especially now don't want to pay big. Yankees now in mix. Cards still on fringes. Phils slight interest.
The odds that Philadelphia will pull this move off are very small, but if any team would be willing to give more prospects away, it would be Philadelphia.
While the move seems like a short-term solution, if the Phillies can lock him up Bell long-term, they could move Lidge and have a consistent closer.
Madson and Bastardo have both shown that they can close games if needed, and both might be eventual closers, but I rather have Bell closing games than anyone else in the Philadelphia bullpen.
It won’t be smart to give up more of the talent in the farm system after sending so much away in the Pence trade, but if it means have a top-tier backend of the rotation, it would be worth it.
