Phillies Trade Rumors: Philadelphia Still Kicking Tires on Closer Heath Bell
The Philadelphia Phillies already made a huge splash in the trade market before the deadline with the deal that sent Houston Astros outfielder Hunter Pence to Philadelphia.
While Pence is the perfect addition to a team that has a potent offense which is sputtering, the Phillies may not be done making wild deals.
With a few injured pitchers coming off the disabled list, Philadelphia’s bullpen is looking stronger, but the upper management might not be satisfied.
Baseball Analyst for ESPN.com Jim Bowden is reporting:
Here is the up-date on Heath Bell: Texas, St.Louis, Toronto are the clear leaders to get Bell...LAA,NYY,Phil are still kicking tires #TRADES
Heath Bell is one of the best closers in the game, and the San Diego Padres are just trying to move him because they won’t re-sign him when he becomes a free agent this offseason.
That makes Bell a rental player for any team that makes the move for him, and the Padres can’t be asking for too much in return. They should be taking anything they can get if he isn’t in their long-term plans.
While the trade of Heath Bell to Philadelphia is very unlikely after the Pence deal, the idea that the Phillies are still making an attempt to make another deal is a great sign for the diehard fans of the team.
Bell would become the eighth-inning set-up man for the Phillies if they snagged him, but if anyone falters, Bell would slide right in and make the job his own.
