NBA Trade Scenarios: 5 Deals That May Convince Phoenix Suns to Move Steve Nash

Carlos SandovalJul 19, 2011

The Phoenix Suns have a bit of a situation on their hands: Deal Steve Nash to a contender and let the fans see their beloved superstar win a title, or keep him in Phoenix and develop younger players.

As of now, the Phoenix Suns aren't interested in trading Nash.

However, in the NBA, things aren't certain: We've seen shocking deals that completely change the landscape of an entire conference or division, or equally shocking trades that see role players help push a team over the edge.

The Suns could use some more pieces to re-build: After unloading some cap space and receiving some solid, young pieces to their team in a blockbuster trade with the Orlando Magic, the Suns are in full-blown reconstruction mode, and since they have an aging superstar on their team in Steve Nash, they could accelerate that process greatly.

But what will pry the Suns' beloved point guard from the organization's hands?

Los Angeles Lakers: Lamar Odom, Shannon Brown to Phoenix for Steve Nash

1 of 5

OK, so maybe the Phoenix Suns won't get very much younger if they decide to trade Steve Nash to Los Angeles for Lamar Odom and Shannon Brown.

However, for a team that could use some versatility, size, and athleticism, this makes sense.

Lamar Odom is damn near unguardable when he decides to play hard; just ask the 2010 Phoenix Suns, who found themselves killed by Odom twice in the Western Conference Finals.

Shannon Brown doesn't pose a great offensive threat, but he's explosive as hell and he'll provide enough buzz for Suns' fans to be cool with.

So most Suns fans won't want this to happen, but this move -- coupled with the cap space the Suns could dump as a result -- could do wonders.

Memphis Grizzlies: Rudy Gay and Darrell Arthur to Phoenix for Nash and Pietrus

2 of 5

Phoenix Suns' fans are like, "Now this is more like it."

It'll be tough to sell to the Memphis Grizzlies that they should take Steve Nash, who is in his late-30s, doesn't play defense, and possibly past his prime.

However, the Memphis Grizzlies could use some more veteran backage to add to their surprising swagger.

Rudy Gay didn't look like he was needed all that much in the playoffs, with his team taking a very-good Oklahoma City Thunder squad to seven games in the second round of the playoffs in what is known as one of the most exciting playoff series ever.

Those buzzer-beaters that Rudy Gay is so famous for? Fuh' get about it! The Grizzlies were able to produce some themselves.

The Phoenix Suns wouldn't mind having a 24-year-old Rudy Gay, who actually started living up to his max contract last season, either.

Philadelphia 76ers: Andre Iguodala and Evan Turner for Nash and Pietrus

3 of 5

Andre Iguodala has been on the Philadelphia 76ers trade block for the entire offseason, despite his do-all capabilities.

However, Philly needs something Steve Nash is a machine at: Scoring from the perimeter at any given time.

Andre Iguodala is relatively young and has All-Star abilities, since he can defend some of the best players in the world while playing decent basketball off the ball.

Iguodala would provide a huge step forward for the Suns' organization, and landing rookie Even Turner would be yet another win (though, he didn't have an amazing rookie season).

The 76ers could also use some of Mickael Pietrus' outside offense, too.

Minnesota Timberwolves: Anthony Randolph, Mike Beasley, Wesley Johnson to PHX

4 of 5

Would the Phoenix Suns bite on trading Steve Nash (along with Robin Lopez) for Anthony Randolph, Michael Beasley, and Wesley Johnson?

They might, but the Minnesota Timberwolves may not. It would make sense, sure, if they wanted Steve Nash to come in and mentor Ricky Rubio, but Nash is 36.

However, the youthful Pups could use Nash's wily experience to go along with Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio's immediate talent.

The Suns would be getting amazing value: Despite Beasley's reputation and legal troubles, he's still a solid player. Additionally, Wesley Johnson and Anthony Randolph surprised thousand with their spectacular play. (Yes, only thousands; did you watch the Wolves play last year?)

Milwaukee Bucks: Brandon Jennings, Jon Brockman, Ersan Ilyasova, and Drew Gooden

5 of 5

If there's any trade the Phoenix Suns must agree to, it's this one.

What would the Suns give up? Steve Nash and Robin Lopez.

Brandon Jennings is only 22, and he showed a hell of a lot of potential in his time with the Milwaukee Bucks. Jon Brockman may not get much minutes, but he's still a solid backup power forward if given time to develop.

Ersan Ilyasova is another young player, at the age of 24, who provides enough room to rebuild for the Phoenix Suns. Drew Gooden would be filler, but even then, his rebounding capabilities are ridiculous.

The Milwaukee Bucks could use a hell of a lot of offense, and Steve Nash provides just that. He and Andrew Bogut would make a solid duo, and Milwaukee would also be happy with the deal.
