The rumors will begin to start within the next few weeks, probably with the start of the general manager meetings this week. The next month, and more so through the Winter Meetings, will be fun. We’ll hear the rumors, see some signings and hopefully see some trades to help improve the ‘09 ballclub.
As things move along we’ll dig into the team’s options and go over the moves that are made. Before everything begins though, we’re left with nearly nothing.
The MLB Trade Rumors blog has put together their list of the Top 50 free agents for this off-season, and they have the Twins signing two of them:
18. Casey Blake - Twins. If the Twins don't like the asking prices for Garrett Atkins and Adrian Beltre, Blake may be the best third baseman on the free agent market.
21. Orlando Cabrera - Twins. Completing the Twins' new-look infield. Blake and Cabrera should be capable of league-average production.
As they mention in their story, these moves are assuming teams don’t make trades. As they state right next to Blake’s name, if the Twins don’t like any of the trade options out there, Casey could be a good option and eventually could make his return to the Twin Cities.
Personally, I’d have to say that I wouldn’t be all that upset if their off-season entailed these two moves, the addition of a bullpen pitcher in some way and maybe a trade of an excess outfielder. I’d like to see someone like Atkins, Beltre or Kouzmanoff brought in to fill the third base void, but who knows what the asking price will be.
