Brandon Marshall: Multiple Personality Disorder Diagnosis Latest Drama
It's no secret that Brandon Marshall's past is riddled with controversy. He is just as well known for his off-the-field antics and run ins with the law as he is for his dominant play.
Marshall has been viewed as a superstar and a villain, but finds himself in strange territory after revealing he is battling a multiple personality disorder. He's currently an object of sympathy, even a hero to some extent.
Marshall's public declaration of his mental disorder is admirable. It's can't be easy to come out and make himself vulnerable, as he has.
He's now the face of a disorder that affects so many. He has opened the door for attention to be brought to the disorder and for others to learn how to cope with their condition.
Just months after being stabbed in a domestic violence dispute, Marshall has rerouted public perception. He was once viewed in a similar light as Pacman Jones, in that he simply couldn't bring himself to stay on the straight and narrow.
Now, he's viewed in a completely different light. People can now recognize that he has a problem. When hearing Marshall speak, it's clear that he's not trying to justify his poor choices in his past and he isn't looking for a cop out.
He's simply facing the public and letting people into his world. It's that sort of transparency that can allow him to win over fans. Being a professional athlete doesn't make Marshall immune to everyday problems.
By revealing his medical problem, he becomes easy to identify with. It doesn't take someone with a multiple personality disorder to relate to Marshall. He's struggling to overcome a problem that he has. That is much more understandable and forgivable than a guy deliberately exuding defiance.
Marshall improves his image and has received a tremendous amount of support from his peers, fans and even those completely uninvolved. This was a brave move by Marshall that should result in a huge boost to his off-the-field image.
