Abby Wambach Goal: Watch American's Header in Extra Time of World Cup Final

Wes ODonnellJul 17, 2011

Every time the US needed a goal it was Abby Wambach that answered the call with her head again and again and again.

After an earlier goal from Alex Morgan that looked like it would seal the deal for a victory, Japan knocked home an equalizer on a terrible bit of defense in the box.

So, as we had seen already in the quarterfinals against Brazil, the US went into extra time once again and this time they struck first.

In the 103rd minute off of what looked like a broken play, Morgan took the ball from outside the box, carried it to the end line and sent in a low, driving cross that found the most talented head in all women's soccer and was aimed directly into the back of the net.

The goal accomplished a trio of feats including giving the US another one-goal lead.

It was Wambach's fourth goal in four games, moved her to third all-time in goals scored in the World Cup and first all-time for an American.

It was simply another brilliant performance from one of the most talented goal scorers to ever step on the pitch.

The goal didn't last though, and Japan's equalizer forced the US into their second penalty shootout of the tournament.

And unfortunately goals were not easy to come by as the first three US shots were missed while Japan put home two of three.

Wambach, the fourth shooter, was the only one to score for the US before Japan sealed the World Cup on their fourth shot.

Japan earned the victory as the US blew multiple opportunities early in the game and for all the US hype and triumph of this tournament, it all goes for a second place finish.

Wambach truly shined though, as both a goal scorer and an overall player, and hopefully this isn't the last time we see her head sending home goals in the World Cup for the US.
