UFC 133 is once again in need of a light heavyweight fighter to step in on short notice, as Antonio Rogerio "Minotouro" Nogueira has been forced from his fight against former UFC champion Rich Franklin.
The news that Nogueira was off the Aug. 6 card was first reported by Tatame, who learned of Nogueira's injury from Fabio Maldonado.
Two other light heavyweight fighters, Phil Davis and Vladimir Matyushenko were also forced from the card recently.
Davis, who was booked to face Rashad Evans in the main event, was pulled due to a knee injury and replaced by Tito Ortiz. Matyushenko was forced from his bout against Alexander Gustafsson and replaced by Matt Hamill.
One man who should consider getting in touch with UFC matchmaker Joe Silva is Lyoto Machida.
Machida, UFC president Dana White revealed during a media conference call, had initially agreed to replace Phil Davis in the main event.
"I called Lyoto Machida, who has been terrorizing me for a fight for a long time, saying he's wanted a fight, he accepted the fight and was very excited about it."
Later in the call White said that when the Machida camp was called back, they had some new demands, "Never do I expect to have a guy accept a fight and then call him back and have him say, 'Now you're gonna have to pay Anderson Silva money.' It's not even like the camp came back and said, 'You know what, we want an extra this or that.' They came straight out and said, 'We want Anderson Silva money.'"
White continued, "Anderson Silva has gone undefeated in the UFC since 2006. He's broken every record there is in the UFC. He moved up a weight class and beat two guys at 205 easily and has dominated and cleaned out the entire 185-pound division, and you want his money? I've never even heard anything so...I don't even know how to put a word on that."
Machida gave his side of the story to Sherdog.com:
“I wanted a guarantee to fight [Evans at UFC 133]. My manager, ‘Joinha’ [Jorge Guimaraes], called me and I said at first that I was excited to be in the lineup. But after meeting with my team, we saw that it wouldn’t be a good idea, especially because Dana White wanted me to travel to the U.S. immediately to have my training camp there.
"Many of the members of my corner don’t have visas right now. Then, I said, ‘If you want me to fight, pay me as a champion. Pay me like you pay Anderson Silva.'"
During the conference call, White expressed a great deal of disappointment in how the Machida camp handled the negotiations for the Evans fight. Machida has a chance to get back in the good graces of the UFC and the promotion's president if he steps up to take Nogueira's place at UFC 133.
Machida and Franklin have met before, with Machida defeating Franklin via second round TKO on Dec. 31, 2003 in Kobe, Japan.
This one bears some watching.
