On November 5, 2010, the USA were upset in historic fashion by Mexico 2-1. Carli Lloys was the only scorer for the States, in the 25th minute. That forced the USA to play a third-place playoff with Costa Rica to take on Italy in the UEFA-CONCACAF playoff.

On November 8, 2010, the Stars and Stripes dusted off Costa Rica 3-0 through an Abby Wambach brace in the 33rd and 50th minutes and another from Lauren Cheney in the 17th minute of play.

In the first leg of the UEFA-CONCACAF play-off, held on November 20, 2011 at the Stadio Euganeo in Padua, a goal from Morgan in the last minute of stoppage time gave the States a 1-0 victory heading in the second leg at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois on November 27, 2010. Amy Rodriguez's 40th minute goal sealed the USA's berth as the last team in the field of 16.
