Florida and Texas Tech: Kings of the Land

Christopher WilliamsCorrespondent INovember 2, 2008

Can you guys help me out on this? If someone came up to me today and told me to pick the two teams that should play in the National Championship game at this point of the season I would have to go with Florida—Texas Tech.

Is this a legit National Championship match up? I can sit here and break it down as to why I think they are the two best teams as of right now, but to be honest with you the fact I watched both teams yesterday makes my opinion biased.

Florida simply dominated a good Georgia team. Texas Tech beat the No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns in a game in which they were in the lead until Texas came back with less than two minutes left. They came back and score with one second left to pull off the “upset.”

Texas Tech is now 9-0 but they still have Oklahoma St and Oklahoma left to play, but at this point I think they are one of two teams who should play in the National Championship if the season ended today.

The Gators of 7-1, but the loss to Ole Miss might have been the best thing to happen to this team. After getting upset by the Rebels at home something snapped, the Gators are playing with a chip on their shoulder and I do not think anyone can beat them again this season. So what about the others?

They are third on my list, I was big on Penn St for the last few weeks, but the more I think about it the more I realize they are good but not National Championship team good. If there were a semi-final game leading up to the National Championship game it would have to out of Florida, Texas Tech, Alabama and Penn State. Alabama and Penn State, however, would be the lower seeds.

Penn State

See above comments.

The Trojans lost to Oregon State and although they beat Ohio State, I am not impressed with their shut outs against Washington, Washington State and Arizona State. The combined record of the three teams they shut out is 3-22, this is not much to brag about.

Not to mention, Penn State beat Ohio State so if Penn State doesn’t deserve a shot in the National Championship with a 9-0 record, USC does not deserve to go at 7-1 and a lost to Oregon St. By the way, if you are going to argue the fact Florida lost to Ole Miss., it was by one point and Ole Miss is a much better team than Oregon State.

If they didn’t get beat by Texas they would trump Penn State, but I have a feeling when it is all said and done, we might see Okahoma and Florida battle it out for the best team in the land.

Please give me feedback on this. Am I out of line? Or do you feel the same way?
