Boxing Round of the Day: Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward in "Round of the Century"
It's been two years since boxing's fan favorite and ultimate blood and guts warrior Arturo "Thunder" Gatti took his life at the age of 37.
His questionable death was ruled a suicide in a life of ongoing battles outside the ring, but he will always be remembered for the ones he had inside the squared circle, especially the ones he had with none other than "Irish" Micky Ward.
Round 9 of his first fight with Ward is one of the greatest rounds to ever go down, and it made a great fight even better. Many call it the round of the century.
Shortly into the round, Gatti was dropped by a body shot—a punch that Ward had knocked out many opponents with—a punch Zab Judah called the hardest he had ever been hit with.
Gatti barely beat the 10-count, but that's all he needed to let the ref let him continue. He proceeded to take a nonstop barrage of more than 15 unanswered punches but was still standing and fired back shots of his own, ending the round with the momentum in his favor.
It was a grueling battle of heart and determination for the majority of the bout. Between rounds, both boxers' corners were basically telling them if they took any more punishment, they would stop the fight. That's when you know you are watching something special.
Ward would go on to win a majority decision over 10 rounds, but there were no winners or losers in this fight.
