Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Gunners Considering Stewart Downing Deal

James DudkoJun 7, 2018

Sky Sports News reports that Arsenal have a made an initial inquiry to Aston Villa, regarding the transfer status of winger Stewart Downing.  The report has also been picked up by several UK newspapers.

Sky Sports understand that Downing remains committed to sealing a move to Liverpool, but Arsenal feel that the lure of Champions League football may be too great for the 26-year-old England international to resist.

A move for Downing would hardly be the marquee signing many sections of the Gunners supporters are demanding.  With a fee thought to be in the region of £15-19 million likely needed to pry him away from VIlla, Downing would have a lot of work to do to prove he justifies such a hefty price tag.

Comfortable operating on either flank, Downing is a tricky left-footer who possesses the creative instincts which could help him flourish in Arsenal's style of play.  Downing weighed in with eight goals and seven assists for Villa last season.

The former Middlesbrough star is a decent crosser of the ball but is stronger playing along the ground.  An energetic and hard-working player, Downing would bring quickness and industry to Arsenal's game.

If Downing does arrive at Ashburton Grove, it will raise interesting questions about how Arsene Wenger plans to deploy his team this season.  Gervinho is set to be confirmed as an Arsenal player in the near future and many have tabbed the Ivory Coast star to play in a right-sided forward's role.

With the future of Samir Nasri still in doubt, Downing could replace the Frenchman on the left side if Arsenal choose to retain their current 4-3-3 shape.

In this eventuality, Theo Walcott's place in the starting 11 would be in jeopardy.  It's possible that Arsene Wenger could be seeking to upgrade the wide areas in preparation for a return to a 4-4-2 formation.  This could involve Walcott finally being give the opportunity to utilise his speed and finishing ability through the middle.
