Miami Dolphins: Settling for Mediocrity Again with Quarterback Matt Moore

Randy ChambersJul 29, 2011

So much for a competition at the quarterback position.

Stephan Ross and the Miami Dolphins origination promised the fans that they will bring in somebody to push Chad Henne. Somebody that will bring competition and either make Henne earn the starting position for the first time in his career or take a backseat to a better quarterback.

For the last couple of days, you have heard the Miami Dolphins were in serious talks with the Denver Broncos for quarterback Kyle Orton. Orton was not going to be the next Dan Marino but would surely be a considerable upgrade over Henne. Over 3,500 yards and 20 touchdowns the last two seasons and has thrown way more touchdowns than interceptions, unlike Henne.

Orton has already developed a connection with Brandon Marshall in Denver, where he caught 101 passes for over 1,000 yards and double-digit touchdowns. Henne had more of a connection with dumping the ball down to his running backs than he did with the top 10 wideout.

The Miami Dolphins haven't had a quarterback throw for 20 touchdowns since 2001 when Jay Fiedler did it. Orton could have been the guy to break that disappointing streak.

Unfortunately, management decided to go another way.

Today, the Miami Dolphins signed quarterback Matt Moore.

Moore has been the league for three seasons, playing for the Carolina Panthers and started just 13 games. His completion percentage is 57 percent and has thrown just one touchdown than interception. The causal fan never even heard of this guy.

If you're the causal fan, all you need to know is Moore lost his starting job to Jimmy Clausen. Yes, the same Clausen who was given one season before the Panthers drafted a project in Cam Newton. The same quarterback that threw six more interceptions than touchdowns and was on his back more than a street worker.

Now, to be fair, Moore does have potential, and with a little work, he could maybe become a decent quarterback. His numbers are similar to Chad Henne's, and he played for a horrible Panthers team for three seasons.

But what happened to the competition? Bringing in a undrafted quarterback and a quarterback with the same skill set isn't competition.

Why not call Vinny Testaverde and convince him to come out of retirement. Kerry Collins? What about Brett Favre? Adam Sandler? Hey, he played well in the movie the "Longest Yard;" he couldn't possibly be any worse than the 16 quarterbacks the Dolphins have experienced since Marino left.

Dolphins expect to win and win now. Why not pick up a proven quarterback that could take you to the next level, instead of hoping one of the three mediocre quarterbacks on your depth chart somehow turn it around and become good.

But what makes the whole situation even better is the Dolphins are now saying they are confident in Chad Henne's ability. If they were so confident, they wouldn't have went and tried to replace him in the first place.

This is the same situation that happened at the end of last season when Miami tried to replace coach Tony Sparano for Jim Harbaugh. When they couldn't work a deal, they act like it never happened.

You can't try to cheat on your girlfriend, get turned down and expect your girlfriend to look at you the same way.

This mistake could go down with drafting Ted Ginn Jr. with the ninth overall pick and taking Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees, along with the many other mistakes the Dolphins organization has made recently.

Good news is there will still be competition at the quarterback position. The winner will be the one that is the least awful, as the Dolphins settle for another season of mediocrity.
