WWE: Is John Cena Winning the War of Words with the Rock?
Since it was announced that The Rock would be hosting Wrestlemania this past April he and John Cena have been going back and forth verbally and physically.
Prior to Mania The Rock and Cena were involved in some altercations during WWE matches and at the event itself The Rock cost Cena his match against The Miz after being the one to restart it.
The two faced off the next night and it was made official, The Rock would return to fight Cena at Wrestlemania 28.
This was the first time the WWE has planned a main event a year in advance, which meant they had a long road ahead of themselves. In order to keep the angle in the backs of people's minds WWE has had Cena and Rock feud on Twitter.
The insults seem to follow a trend. Cena comments on the Rock not being at any actual WWE events representing team "Bring it" while Rocky mocks Cena's cookie cutter good guy image and brightly colored shirts.
The fact of the matter is that Rocky is the guy who will draw the bigger ovation nine out of 10 times between he and Cena, but it may not happen that way come WrestleMania time.
Since his last appearance The Rock has been filming and promoting movies like Fast Five and the upcoming GI Joe sequel, meanwhile Cena has been fighting at WWE events week after week.
During some recent house shows Cena has delivered promos directed at the Rock. One given at an event in Sydney was actually compared by some fans to Punk's worked shoot promo from two week's ago.
Apparently Cena really ripped into Dwayne and how he is never really there for his fans. Punk even put over Cena at a recent event saying Cena is out fighting for his fans in sickness and health (which is true according to recent reports of Cena fighting some injuries) While Rocky was off filming movies and not being there for the fans.
Although I am a Rock fan and have recently become a fan of Cena, I have to say that right now I would root for Cena in the match.
Despite how I feel about Cena's rise to stardom, and how I feel about Rock's contributions to the business I have to recognize the fact that Cena has actually been wrestling longer at this point than Rocky did.
Dwayne Johnson began training in 1995 to wrestle and he made his WWE debut in 1996. He had his last match in 2004 at WrestleMania XX with Mick Foley against Evolution, which meant he went from trainee to leaving the company in nine years.
Cena began training in 2000 and made his WWE debut in 2002. This means he started training 11 years ago and has spent nine in WWE, one more than Rocky did.
This means that technically Cena has been in the WWE longer than Rocky was, and that is something I think a lot of people are overlooking.
Cena has become the poster boy for the company and some people see a problem with that, but I don't anymore. I realized sometime in the last year that Cena is perfect for the role he has.
He trains hard, keeps in shape, improves year to year and barely gets injured. Combine this with the fact that he does more press and charity for the company than anyone else and you have the reason he is on top.
Rocky was that guy in WWE before Cena was even in WWE, but now some fans seem to want to hold on to those years when Rocky was at the peak of his career and WWE catered to a TV-14 audience.
Cena in my opinion is winning the feud between him and Rocky for the simple reason that what he is saying is 100 percent the truth, and I think if the last few week's have taught us anything it's that the truth can make for a more interesting storyline than fiction.
By having Cena point out the Rock's absence to his fans they are almost setting him up to be the hero of the match, and I hoe he is.
Frankly I hope Rocky comes in as a heel. I think it is unlikely that he would do that, but how cool would a Rock heel turn be the next time he showed up Raw. Then we would have a definite good guy vs bad guy match on our hands.
This is something the WWE is setting up so far in advance because they hope the hype will live long enough to capitalize on it, and I am sure it will. The only problem is that there is currently no bad guy in this fight, and if fans are split down the middle it usually makes for a more interesting match, but not when both guys are supposed to be universally loved.
Rock is never going to come back to wrestling full time, we need to accept that and move on, but what we can hope for is that he is willing to play the game and not only be willing to put over someone else, but be willing to look like the bad guy in the process.
I know many will disagree and say that having them as both faces would be better, but I truly feel that a match of this magnitude should have a defined hero and villain because history shows us that matches between one good guy and one bad guy usually make for better storytelling in the ring.
So who do you think has the upper hand in the feud right now?
