Liverpool Transfer News: Is Charlie Adam Still a Good Fit for Reds?

Sam WestmorelandJun 1, 2018

Liverpool have had their eye on landing Charlie Adam in the transfer market for months now.

The Reds have been pushing to score the Blackpool midfielder from his now-relegated club since back in January, but most of their efforts have been rebuffed by the Tangerines, who were wont to send away their most talented player while they were fighting relegation.

Now, with the Tangerines back in the Championship, Liverpool have redoubled their efforts to land the 25-year-old Scotsman, and they have finally paid off.

Per the report, Adam is slated to undergo a medical at Anfield today, and the club confirmed they had agreed to terms with Blackpool and were prepared to negotiate a new deal with Adam.

With Liverpool's quest for the young Scot likely coming to an end, is he really the right fit for Anfield, or would they have been better off leaving him with the Seasiders for next season?

Adam brings plenty to the table that the Reds have to like. He's an explosive offensive talent who thrives in an attacking role, and will likely thrive as the primary scoring option for the Reds in the midfield.

He's a skilled playmaker capable of creating chances for teammates, and when he's clicking, he can be a force in the midfield.

On top of that, when paired with the newly acquired Jordan Henderson (or the currently injured Steven Gerrard), Adam gives Liverpool one of the better young midfield tandems in the sport.

Liverpool needed another central midfielder with Gerrard out for the start of next season, and Adam is more than capable of filling that role alongside the 21-year-old Henderson.

The Scotsman is surprisingly versatile as well, and while he never played on the wing at Blackpool, his skill set could translate well to the outside of the midfield.

But at the same time, there are those who wonder whether Adam creates a logjam in the central midfield for the Reds.

After all, when Steven Gerrard returns from injury, it would give Liverpool three top-tier central midfielders (although Adam is the least talented of the trio), and it's unclear quite where Adam would fit in the Reds system at that point.

Dalglish has given little indication of wanting a five-midfielder set, and that could leave Adam as the odd man out.

Adam's arrival also spells the end of Alberto Aquilani and Christian Poulsen's time at Anfield, although both were likely headed out anyway.

Despite the concerns about a logjam in central midfield, there's little doubt that Adam gives the Reds a versatility and depth in the midfield that they've lacked recently.

His attacking prowess should be a welcome addition to the Reds, and while he creates a bit of a logjam in the center, it's nothing Dalglish can't figure out between now and the start of the season.

He came relatively cheaply at just £9 million, and given the upside he possesses, he should be well worth that for the Kop faithful.

In the end, this was a move many saw coming a mile away, and it stands to reason that Adam was a smart investment for the Reds. He gives them the offense they need while Gerrard recovers, as well as a potential replacement should he get hurt.

Adam figures to thrive in Dalglish's system, and as long as he stays healthy, he was a smart investment for Liverpool.
