Arsenal Aim to Snatch Aston Villa Winger Stewart Downing from Liverpool
MirrorFootball have reported that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is preparing a £20 million bid for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing after Liverpool looked certain to secure the Englishman for £18 million. Downing is destined to leave Aston Villa due to aspirations to grace UEFA football and boast a sufficient Premier League title challenge.
Downing enjoyed a stellar 2010/2011 in which the English international was named the Aston Villa Player of the Year. However the arrival of new manager Alex McLiesh and the departure of star winger Ashley Young have also impacted the 26-year-old's decision to leave Villa Park. It was rumoured Villa were willing to allow the former Middlesbrough attacker to transfer to Liverpool provide they pay £18 million.
However Arsenal are set to have a commanding say as Wenger prepares a £20 million bid for the Englishman. Manager Arsene Wenger has an increased transfer budget and is need of potential replacements as a number of star attackers appear to be heading towards the door.
Downing does possess desires to play UEFA Champions League football, a privellege Liverpool cannot offer and it is unclear whether Reds' manager Kenny Daglish will offer an increased bid with Arsenal's presence.
