Jeff Burton: How Many More Chances Will He Have To Win It All?
At 41 years old, many people are wanting to write Jeff Burton off the contenders list. Sure he may make the chase a few more times, but win it? Most think no.
Some say he doesn't have the "killer instinct" it takes. He doesn't take chances. He's more a contender for Mr. Congeniality than NASCAR Champion. I think those are actually some of the qualities that could land him in the top spot someday soon.
He doesn't abuse equipment, is patient to make his move and won't cause a crash to advance a spot. To win a championship, he knows you have to be running at the end. Kyle Bush is learning this the hard way.
Besides that here's what Burton has in his favor:
- An owner who is committed to winning and committed to him. Richard will spend the money to stay in the upper tier of NASCAR.
- A good car to drive each week. Richard Childress finally has their hands in control of this "Car of Tomorrow" and after a slow start are fielding quality products. They have a great group of builders and while Burton may not have always had the fastest car, his was one of the best handling.
- Reliability is there. How many DNF's due to engine failure for his team? Few enough to know that he can have confidence if he keeps the sheet metal on it.
- You have to have a first class crew chief. Scott Miller is still learning, but he's learning fast. He's not Chad Knaus, but he's getting there. All this experience in the last few chases will help him. Burton has faith in him and that will sure help.
- You need good team mates at some tracks. Kevin Harvick and Clint Boyer are consistent chase members. They all respect each other and would help a fellow team member.
Nobody thought Earnhardt was incapable of winning in his 40's with Richard. Anybody who thinks that Burton can't do that is underestimating this wily old veteran. I join the ranks of those who say, not if, but when.
