NHL Rumors: Alexei Yashin Will Be Perfect Compliment for Sidney Crosby
After playing the last four years in Russia, former New York Islanders captain Alexei Yashin may be eyeing the same style return NHL great Jaromir Jagr is with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Only Yashin could be going to the team that everyone thought Jagr would end up with, the Pittsburgh Penguins. While the fit seems a bit odd, Yashin’s ability to set passes up Crosby or Malkin could make him much more valuable than a player like Alex Kovalev was.
While Yashin would be most willing to go back to the New York Islanders where he was so successful, all the possibilities have to intrigue him.
Hockey Insider Eklund said on Hockey Buzz:
Yashin is getting serious consideration, and some suggest he could "tear it up with Sidney in Pittsburgh." Some are also saying Montreal could get in on Yashin "pending a second deal." Also, I am hearing a trade is about to go down with NJ and San Jose..."mid-level" but I haven't been able to get any more yet...
While he is 37 years old, Yashin has played fewer games than most NHL players in the last four years, and his production has been solid in the KHL.
For the Penguins, they will be asking him to either play second line center with Malkin on one of his wings, or playing as a third line center with Jordan Stall on his wing.
While the idea is novel, the New York Islanders will have the inside line on signing him if he does decide to start playing in the NHL again, but the Penguins can certainly offer a better opportunity for a Stanley Cup than the Islanders this year.
