As it sits right now, the New York Islanders have one of the best young cores in the entire NHL, and this season will be a great test to see what they are made of.

There is a good possibility that if veteran goalie Evgeni Nabokov will agree to play with the team that they could make a push for a playoff spot. The Eastern conference is a mess after the top six or seven teams, and with some defensive help to protect Nabokov, the Islanders could sneak in.

Besides more defensive help, the Islanders have to find some more depth at forward, and someone with some experience would be a welcomed change.

One name that has been on the tongues of some rumor hounds for New York has been Wojtek Wolski, and Hockey Insider Eklund said on Hockey Buzz:

Much chatter coming out of Long Island tonight..and beyond just the interesting news that Nabokov will slip an Islanders jersey on and report to camp. The Isles are watching the Wolski situation closely..as is Columbus..If Callahan's ruling comes in high most believe Wolski will be bought out in the second buyout period coming up. The Isles and Predators are also talking to Buffalo...no word on who the Sabres will be moving to get the 4Million off the cap they need...

There could be some big deals coming down the pike still this offseason, and it looks the like the Islanders believe Nabokov will play with them because they are going hard after some odd players.

New York is not in a position to win now by any stretch of the imagination, but with a strong core like they have, getting them acquainted to the playoffs now will be great for their psyches.

If the team can manage to bring in some serious defensive help, they have the talent at forward to get them in a solid position to make a run at the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.
