NHL Trade Rumors: Detroit Red Wings Poised for Blockbuster Deal
The Detroit Red Wings are almost seven million dollars under the salary cap right now, and it appears there is a real method to their madness.
With that much money in the bank, the Red Wings have to feel good about their options in the trade market, especially with the plethora of young prospects in their farm systems.
While many rumors have come to the surface during these last few weeks, no deal makes more sense for Detroit than trading for Washington Capitals enigmatic forward Alex Semin.
Hockey Insider Eklund told Hockey Buzz:
Detroit: When was the last time they had Cap Space? Expect Holland to NOT be the "kid with a new credit card" that we have seen elsewhere...The Wings are VERY in on Semin.
Semin lacked a sense of direction on the Capitals because of all the attention paid on both Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, and a new start would be the kick in the pants that Semin needs.
With all of the strong leaders on the Red Wings squad, Semin will not be allowed to mail in his effort because players like Nicklas Lidstrom will let him know exactly where he stands.
Semin would not have the type of pressure he had in Washington with Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg ahead of him on the depth chart, but he would have a new direction that he could follow.
Detroit has too much cap space left to not attempt a blockbuster move, and if Washington is really looking to shed salary cap room, they would be forced to take less than value for Semin.
The veteran-laden Red Wings need to get younger at the forward position, and a trade for Semin would be the best way to infuse that youth.
