Humor Bowl

Last year the Chicago Bears went to the Super Bowl for the first time in 21 years. It was the first time I got to see my team go to the big game since I was 10. It was an exciting time here in Chicago—so exciting that I got sick.

The week prior to the Super Bowl I caught that nasty flu that was going around and it was sickest I had been since New Year's Eve 1999 and the first few days of 2000 (no really believed I was sick from the flu).

It all started the Sunday before the Super Bowl. All the hype was really building here in town, there were constant news updates on the team and I was starting to have constant upchucks. (I swear I threw up food from the late 80's.)

By that evening, I was curled up on my bathroom floor in the fetal position, much like the way Rex Grossman spent some of the game.

So of course, Monday I called in sick for work and lay on my couch watching what else? The Super Bowl coverage being shown on every sports show known to man. I saw some of it in between frequent running trips to the bathroom. (If only the Bears running game was so good!)

But by the afternoon I was done running and could finally take soup and just lie down (I had no idea Rex Grossman would do the same days later), so I watched more Super Bowl interviews and analysis. Things were looking better by the end of Monday.

Tuesday, I was feeling a little better but still can't go to work. (People are now starting to have a hard time believing I'm sick the week of the Super Bowl.) I stayed on my couch and watched more Super Bowl coverage, more game plans, more interviews, more on South Beach and all things Bears, Colts and anything remotely related to the game.

I got better as the day went on (can't say the same for all of the Super Bowl hype), and by afternoon I'd had my fill of soup and dumb sports talk. By the end of the day I was tired of hearing about the Super Bowl and was actually ready to go back to work (too bad the Bears weren't).

I did go back to work on Wednesday, but didn't miss all the Super Bowl hype. Although just chillin' on the couch was nice, it was too bad the game had too many Bears with that couch mentality. And Lovie Smith was just chillin' with his game plan.

Thankfully, I was my regular self by game time. Except now Rex Grossman looked to be the one feeling sick.

  1. What is the point of this article? Are you just trying to bash Rex? Did you forget our special teams fumble, a defense that gave up 27 first downs and 450+ yards of offense to the Colts, and turnover by Cedric Benson as well?

Don't forget my friends, Rex Grossman tossed the TD to give us a good lead, 14 - 6, over the Colts who had just torched our D with a TD to Wayne.

Don't forget that the defense gave it right back.

Don't forget that Rex Grossman had a 120 QB rating the first half of the Superbowl.

You can't blame Rex. He only threw 14 first half passes and played very well, but our defense couldn't stop Manning. By halftime, they'd given up our lead, and in the second half, Turner completely abandoned the running game and put all the pressure on Rex to win the game with his arm.

And as much as I like Rex, no way in hell at this point in his life is he going to out-throw Peyton Manning.

Blame Rex for the loss, I'm not saying to not blame him. I blame him too. But I'm sick of you Rex bashers and your tunnel vision arguments. Blame him if you will, but blame EVERYONE, the entire team. If you think he had a bad Superbowl, go back and look at Gannon's 4 INT Superbowl game against the Bucs in a 34-3 loss. Go actually look it up instead of just assuming Rex is one of the worst QB's of all time. I think you'll find different.

But blame the whole team, I'm so sick of hearing it was all Rex Grossman. If you truly believe ONE player affects the outcome of a game involving two 53-men teams, then you should think about taking up writing on another sport you actually understand.

  2. Dude chill okay, I was in no way blaming Grossman and I'm not a Grossman hater, I simply was doing a little story about my illness and the Bears loss and having some fun and humor with it. I'm a lifelong Bears fan and watch the NFL closely.

I know that the whole team loss that game not to mention the Colts and Peyton Manning were pretty good. I know that with the Bears recent issues Tom Brady would look horrible in that offense, you need to have a good O line, a decent rushing game to balance the offense and all facets of the defense need to be on all cylinders to win a championship game and the Bears played a bad Team game that day, Rex made some terrible throws later in the game no doubt, and yes early on he was on.

And listen buddy I understand football, okay, a few mentions of the guy in some of his bad plays doesn't mean I think he's garbage, I think he should be brought back in camp this year and compete for the QB job, I don't blame him for this year's losses either, he needs protection and for Cedric Benson to grow a pair and start playing, he also needs his WRs to stop dropping perfectly and precisely thrown balls (and we all know Grossman has a cannon for an arm), for Ron Turner to draw up offenses that work and for Lovie to take a few risks and act like a head coach, there that's my understanding of it all.
