Versus Tour de France 2011 Stage 9 Results

Stage 9 of the Tour de France witnessed plenty of action and excitement as the breakaway group dominated today.

Luis Leon Sanchez won the stage, as he outraced Thomas Voeckler at the finish line.  However, Voeckler was the biggest winner on the day as he took the yellow jersey from Thor Hushovd.

Hushovd had held the yellow jersey since the second stage, but finally lost it to Voeckler who rode a terrific race.

There were a number of crashes today, including one where a television car crashed into Juan Antonio Flecha and Johnny Hoogerland who were two of the five riders that were part of the breakaway group.  Both were able to continue but neither ended up as a serious threat after the crash.

Prior to that a disastrous crash knocked out four riders including Alexander Vinokourov , Dave Zabriskie, Jurgen Van den Broucke and Frederik Willems.

Vinokourov was in 11th place overall prior to the crash and was a serious threat to end up on the podium.  Prior to the Tour he had announced that this would be his final Tour de France.
