NBA Trade Rumors: Eight Deals That Should Go Down After the Lockout
The 2011 NBA lockout may put a standstill to transactions for the time being, but trade rumors will continue to swirl throughout the summer.
We have seen some extraordinarily large names being mentioned as possible bait in a potential deal, but just how many superstars could be on the move?
With the new financial restrictions for clubs forthcoming, we could be looking at a very differently structured league when everything is finally settled.
Orlando Magic & Atlanta Hawks
1 of 8Orlando Magic acquire: PF Josh Smith, SF Marvin Williams
Atlanta Hawks acquire: PG Jameer Nelson, SF Hedo Turkoglu, future first-round pick
The Magic are going to do everything that they possibly can in an effort to keep Dwight Howard happy and with the team long-term, and Smith represents a definite step in the right direction.
Although he's probably not the missing link in their quest for a championship, the club could rid itself of financial burdens in the contracts of Nelson and Turkoglu.
Both of the veterans could receive a fresh start in Atlanta with a competitive club, while the Magic would bring in players that can help them win now and in the future.
Philadelphia 76ers & New Jersey Nets
2 of 8Philadelphia 76ers acquire: C Brook Lopez, SF Travis Outlaw, PG Jordan Farmar
New Jersey Nets acquire: SF Andre Iguodala, C Marreese Speights
New Jersey would be smart to bring in a legitimate star to pair alongside Deron Williams, as the point guard and Iguodala could potentially form a lethal combination for the new-look Nets.
Although it would be at the cost of Brook Lopez, the Nets could get some breathing room and dig themselves out of the hole that they buried themselves in by signing both Outlaw and Farmar to overly lucrative contracts.
With Williams and Iguodala in the fold, the Nets could make a play for a number of big men free agents that would give them a presence beneath the rim that Lopez doesn't provide.
Los Angeles Lakers & Houston Rockets
3 of 8Los Angeles Lakers acquire: SF Terrence Williams, PF Jordan Hill, PG Jonny Flynn
Houston Rockets acquire: PF Lamar Odom
The consensus as to whether or not the Lakers should pursue a trade involving Odom is fairly split among the fan base, but it may be their best chance at ushering in the youth and athleticism that the team sorely needs.
Houston has made it a priority to get bigger along the front line with the additions of Marcus Morris and Donatas Motiejunas in the draft, and Odom would help add to that cause as a versatile player capable of filling multiple positions.
For Los Angeles, the club gets an insanely athletic swingman in Williams, a promising young big man in Hill to provide capable minutes behind Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, and Flynn would allow the team to negotiate a potential deal for veteran Steve Blake.
Utah Jazz & Detroit Pistons
4 of 8Utah Jazz acquire: SG Richard Hamilton
Detroit Pistons acquire: C Mehmet Okur, SG Raja Bell
The Pistons have been rumored to have been looking for a new home for Hamilton for quite some time now, and the Jazz still desperately need help along the perimeter.
Utah already has a plethora of size down low with Enes Kanter, Derrick Favors, Paul Millsap & Al Jefferson, so there may not be a lot of room for the veteran Okur.
A young Detroit club also could use a veteran or two that know how to play defense the right way, so the addition of Bell would help to usher in a new era of basketball in the post-Kuester era.
Chicago Bulls & Golden State Warriors
5 of 8Chicago Bulls acquire: SG Monta Ellis, C Andris Biedrins
Golden State Warriors acquire: PF Carlos Boozer, SG Ronnie Brewer, future first-round pick
The Bulls have reportedly already sent out feelers for Boozer on the trade market after just one full season of having him on the team, so Chicago may be regretting their sizable investment in the big man.
Although they would have to take on the bloated contract of Biedrins, acquiring Ellis to pair with Derrick Rose in the backcourt could make them an insanely dangerous club on the offensive end.
The Warriors get out from under a couple of heavy financial commitments, and they finally give the keys to Stephen Curry, who has been ready to control that offense since his rookie season concluded.
Los Angeles Clippers & San Antonio Spurs
6 of 8Los Angeles Clippers acquire: PG Tony Parker, SF Richard Jefferson
San Antonio Spurs acquire: PG Mo Williams, C Chris Kaman, lottery-protected future first-round pick
While the Spurs may have dealt George Hill to the Indiana Pacers, that doesn't necessarily indicate that they're done dealing quite yet as they attempt to think about life after Tim Duncan.
Although Parker's departure would be a tough pill to swallow, the Spurs save an incredible amount of money by unloading both Parker and Jefferson.
By acquiring Williams and Kaman in return, the team gets a player to run the offense and a legitimate center to start for the club immediately.
The Clippers could play Jefferson until Al-Farouq Aminu proves ready to take on a full-time role, and Parker would be very fun to watch lobbing alley-oops to Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan regularly.
Phoenix Suns & Washington Wizards
7 of 8Phoenix Suns acquire: PF Andray Blatche
Washington Wizards acquire: SG Mickael Pietrus, C Robin Lopez, future first-round pick, future second-round pick
The Suns really need to think about the long-term picture of their team, and despite the addition of rookie Markieff Morris, Blatche's talent may be too tough to pass up on in this deal.
The team rids of two players that they could probably do without in Lopez and Pietrus, and Blatche would rapidly improve the team as they get younger along the front line next to center Marcin Gortat.
The Wizards seem to be looking to turn the page from the Blatche era after some repetitive off-court shenanigans, and they would be provided some financial flexibility with Pietrus' expiring deal.
Charlotte Bobcats & Indiana Pacers
8 of 8Charlotte Bobcats acquire: SF James Posey, SG Brandon Rush, top-10 protected future first-round pick
Indiana Pacers acquire: PF Boris Diaw
The Pacers are hoping to be a major player in free agency by adding one of the intriguing power forward available, but Diaw may represent a better fit for the time being considering he's got just one year left on his deal.
The Bobcats get rid of one of their surplus big men, net an expiring contract in Posey and get a wing player that could have a nice impact for them in the second unit as a scorer.
Both teams may really benefit from making a swap similar to this one, as neither team is going to make the noise necessary to really compete if they stand pat before next year.
