Wimbledon 2011 Result: Upset-Filled Wimbledon Still Presents Marquee Finishes

Gabe ZaldivarJun 30, 2011

A quick look at the 2011 Wimbledon results would have you wincing from all the powerhouses that have fallen to lesser players.

A couple of weeks ago, we were enthralled with the prospect of seeing the Williams sisters take Centre Court once again. Both Serena and Venus went the way of the dodo in earlier rounds.

Caroline Wozniacki was poised to swing her way into the finals, but ultimately fell to Dominika Cibulkova. The women's bracket would not be won by the top seed after all.

The men were not without their upsetting results at the All England Club. Roger Federer demanded that he had the mettle and stamina to still make a push deep into the later rounds of Wimbledon

In his quarter-final match with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Federer looked passive, lacking the fire that we have seen from earlier iterations of the man. He looks content to relent his chase for the top-spot in the sport he had dominated for so many years.

Despite all the names that were wiped off the marquee of tennis' most prestigious event, there are still some of the best stories in sport to bring us home.

There is no bigger comeback tale in tennis than Maria Sharapova right now. We would have loved to have seen Serena Williams triumph after her injured toe led to a near-fatal embolism. However, just the fact that she came back to win a match is a testament to her fighting spirit.

In the finals, though, we have a star that has been mired by a shoulder injury and inconsistent play for a couple of years now.

Maria Sharapova hopes to maneuver past the demons of unforced errors and self-inflicted service follies that have mired her in the past.

A win at Wimbledon will solidify the notion that you can come back to rule the sport, even when others cast you off as aged and hobbled.

For the men, there are a few story lines to follow. Rafael Nadal has once again shined as the best in the sport. His dominance can hardly be questioned when he rattles of a French Open, and now threatens to put a cherry on the top of the Grand Slam sundae.

Novak Djokovic has been the hottest tennis star in the first half of 2011. It will all be for naught if he fails to collect at Roland Garros and at the All England Club.

All of this pales to the one really interesting plot taking a turn at Wimbledon. Andy Murray once again finds himself in the semi-finals. The Scotsman will be hoping that three times is the charm in his battle against Nadal.

The weight of the United Kingdom will be on his shoulders. We will see soon enough how he handles the added pressure.

It is rare when a major sporting event lives up to the billing. I have suffered through some fairly lame World Series and immensely boring Super Bowls.

This year, Wimbledon has failed to disappoint even the most cynical of observers. The stage is set for one epic finish at the All England Club.
