Yesterday, Deron Williams officially inked his deal to play with Besiktas this coming season. Williams confirmed this when he posted a picture of his signature on an agreement document to his Twitter feed about 16 hours ago.
The move has been long rumored and finally we have some concrete evidence that it will happen if the lockout continues. Chris Broussard of ESPN reported the 1-year deal is worth around $5 million. The deal is tentative still as of now, because of A) the lockout and b) Besiktas currently has their assets frozen pending an investigation of max fixing in soccer.
FIBA still needs to conditionally approve Williams to play in Turkey since he is under contract for two more seasons with the New Jersey Nets.
The players union is ready to staunchly oppose any attempts by the league to block their players from jumping overseas during the lockout. They will legally challenge any effort in which a league, which has stopped paying their players, tries to prevent them from earning a living doing what they do best.
Deron Williams is the most high profile player prepared to make the jump next season. Many NBA superstars are going to ride out the lockout in the States and live off the money they have banked. Williams wants to stay in shape, keep competing at a high level, and earn a solid paycheck. This is why he is one of the premier point guards in the league and may just be the best in the world when he gets back.
With Chris Paul, Rajon Rondo, and other elite point guards prepared to rest on their laurels until the NBA and NBPA agree to a new deal, Williams will be honing his skills and getting better. I think when the season finally resumes, Williams just may be the best point guard on the floor every night.
