Women's World Cup 2011: Team France's Nude Photos Raise Interest in Soccer
Three Members of Team France Posed Nude Before the 2011 Women's World Cup
The women of the France are willing to go to great lengths to spark interest in women's soccer. They are rolling up their sleeves and going to work. In fact, they have rolled up their sleeves so far their shirts are off. And so is every other piece of clothing. At least for three of their players.
Gaetane Thiney, Elodie Thomis and Corine Franco are getting naked for soccer. This attractive trio posed nude for German newspaper Bild. The motto under the picture: "Is this how we should show up before you come to our games?" I am assuming this is a rhetorical question. I didn't see a check box on the picture. I looked and looked again.
They claim they were inspired to shed their clothes afteer German players' appeared in Playboy last month. And it is all in an effort to raise awareness about the women's game.
"The pictures have come out really nice and I really like them," Thiney told Bild. "We wanted to provoke and to generate some discussion."
"We will try to get more attention through our success," she added. And therein lies the secret to building any long term interest in the game. Put an exciting product on the field. Sure it helps if the players smoking hot, but it means little if they aren't compelling on the field.
In the end, they'd end up creating more buzz for nude photos than soccer, and they will quickly get lost in a growing sea of revealing pictures.
And all of this is well and good, but what is getting lost in the shuffle is: What the hell kind of newspapers do they publish in Germany, and do they deliver them here?
