Reports on ESPN soccernet.com and English newspaper The Daily Mail report that Aston Villa and England winger Stewart Downing is on the verge of becoming a Liverpool player.

Kenny Dalglish has been chasing the England winger since the close of last season and today's reports in the above stated media, have suggested that he is close to landing his man.

If the Reds can accept the £19 million fee that new manager Alex McLeish has put on the winger, then he is free to leave.

ESPN soccernet reported that McLeish told the Birmingham Mail newspaper, that he could not stop the departure of his other winger and prized asset Ashley Young, but wanted to keep hold of Downing.

The Villa winger played 39 times last season and scored 8 goals, but it was his 7 assists and overall performances on the wings, that will have attracted Liverpool.

With the line drawn in the sand by Aston Villa, it is now down to Liverpool to see if they are willing to match it.
