While most of the Liverpool players are enjoying a well-deserved summer holiday, Damien Comolli and his staff are probably putting in more hours now than at any other time in the year.
This is their busy period, and the work going on in the background to ensure that the manager, Kenny Dalglish, has the players he wants in his squad come the start of the new season is vital to the club's aspirations for the future.
So another day, and Comolli and his team take another step closer to tying down the signatures of their intended summer transfer targets. But all is not going to be smooth sailing, as they face a fight over a number of the players they are chasing.
With players coming back to begin preseason training in the coming weeks, Dalglish will want to bring in and integrate his new signing into the squad as soon as possible. Coaches Sammy Lee and Steve Clarke will also want to start initiating them into their training programmes and "the Liverpool" as soon as possible, too.

The Daily Mirror has reported, that Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles could be on his way out of Anfield in order to allow manager Kenny Dalglish to have more funds in his transfer kitty to spend on new recruits this summer.
Meireles had a purple patch in the second half of the season and seemed to be cementing his place at Liverpool and looked as if he was to be one of experienced players in the squad that would be setting an example for the youngsters. But it appears that Dalglish seems not to be too unhappy to let him leave.
With the arrival of Jordan Henderson, central midfielders at Liverpool are now quite plentiful and a guaranteed first team place is almost impossible for any of them.
If Liverpool were to allow Meireles to leave, they will look to recover all of the £11 million investment that they made and most probably make a profit, as the Portuguese international has had a successful first season at Liverpool.

Liverpool's pursuit of one of English football's hottest young talents, Conor Wickham continues as reported by the ESPN Soccernet website and the Daily Mirror.
Kenny Dalglish is determined that the Ipswich Town striker will be a Liverpool player at the end of the day, despite a tug of war between the Reds and other clubs, in particular Sunderland.
The Black Cats have now made a formal bid for the England U21 international striker who has been dubbed as the next Wayne Rooney. Wickham made his debut for Ipswich in April 2009 at the tender age of 16 years and 11 days, making him the club's youngest player ever.
Dalglish will make a renewed offer for Wickham's service, confident in the knowledge that the England youngster would prefer a move to Anfield over any other. Other Premier League club such as Arsenal, have also been monitoring proceedings, but it now seems a two way fight between Liverpool and Sunderland will decide Wickham's fate.

Metro are reporting that Juan Mata's agent is suggesting that Valencia winger and Spanish Under 21 international is open to hearing an offer from Liverpool.
Kenny Dalglish is in the market for wingers and the diminutive Valencia winger has not been far off the top of his wanted list and has not been deterred by the supposed £20 million price tag round Mata's neck.
Eight goals in his 33 matches last season, were supported by his 12 assists which has really attracted the Reds, who are extremely lacking when it comes to a good winger.
Valencia, itself has made it clear that their young winger is not for sale but the player's father and agent has stated that any suggests and discussions of a transfer will be put on ice until the Under 21 European Championship are concluded.
If Liverpool are able to land Mata, it will certainly be a wonderful signing as the player is an all energy, hard-worker with creativity and flair thrown in for good measure.

Talksport are reporting that Crystal Palace are willing to listen to offers for star youngster Wilfred Zaha and if the price is right they are willing to do business with the respective club.
Zaha has made his professional debut last season and has been making quite an impression since.
The Reds will face fierce competition from other Premier League outfits such as Stoke City, Fulham, Arsenal and Manchester United who are also reportedly keen on Zaha.
The Palace striker is pacey, with quick feet but his goal tally has not been that impressive, with only a single goal in 44 outings, but has been proving an able second striker with a number of assists in his matches
Born in Ivory Coast, Zaha is also eligible to play for England and has represented the Three Lions at Under 19 level, against Germany in February 2011
Zaha has impressed so much so that he has been award Palace's Young Player of the Year Award for 2011.
It appears that Liverpool have missed out on the signature of 18 year old Brazilian player-maker Lucas Marcelinho as reported on the Reds official website, which gave their source as givemefootball.com.
Marcelinho has been playing so well for his club Sao Paulo, that he has earned an international call to the national team. His playing style has been compared to an existing Brazilian playmaker Kaka, with speed, good passing and typical Brazilian dribbling skills.
Liverpool have been left staggered by the Euro 79 million release clause in Marcelinho's current club contract, which has all but ended the interest Liverpool had in him. The Brazilian giants are not willing to lose their young star players and is hoping that this information will put a stop to anymore interest in the playmaker.
It is looking like manager Kenny Dalglish will have to look elsewhere, when looking for an attacking midfield that he has been after.

Arsenal defender Gael Clichy is desperate for a move Anfield, despite his obvious desire to move Liverpool
It is being reported in The Daily Express that Italian club Roma, are ready to give the Reds a run for the Gunner's defender.
Roma are ready to bid over and above the £5 million offer that Liverpool have lodged with Clichy's current club Arsenal, despite being aware that Clichy wishes to join the Reds.
Arsenal manager not really wishing to sell a player to a fellow title challenger and would prefer to see Clichy go abroad. So it is clear what Wenger's wishes for his left back are.
Clichy would go straight into the Liverpool back line at left back and would provide good experience to the Liverpool youngsters who would be keen for the competition and learn from Clichy's premier league and Champions League experience with the Gunners.
What is clear is that Liverpool have a fight on their hands if they are to land their target.

Kenny Dalglish has been chasing the England winger since the close of last season and today's reports in the above stated media, have suggested that he is close to landing his man.
If the Reds can accept the £19 million fee that new manager Alex McLeish has put on the winger, then he is free to leave.
ESPN soccernet reported that McLeish told the Birmingham Mail newspaper, that he could not stop the departure of his other winger and prized asset Ashley Young, but wanted to keep hold of Downing.

With the line drawn in the sand by Aston Villa, it is now down to Liverpool to see if they are willing to match it.
