Well we are half way through the season and I thought that it would be a good time to look at the race for NFL MVP. First, here is who I think are the top 3 candidates.
1. Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis
Through the first 8 weeks of the season Clinton Portis leads the NFL with 944 yards rushing and 7 TDs. With his team at 6-2, you would have to say that alot of it has to do with how well he is running the ball. One factor is the head coach Jim Zorn. Zorn was the QB coach in Seattle from 2001-2007 and was there when former Seahawk Shaun Alexander won the MVP award. Alexander is now Portis's teammate. Portis is on pace for 1,888 rushing and 14 TD's. The yardage will be plenty, but the TDs do not compare to the 27 Alexander scored in 2005. Obviously it will depend on the numbers his competition put up.
2. New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees
Drew Brees has been one of the top 5 passers since joining the Saints in 2006. He consistently puts up better numbers than the season before, but not as well as he has since joining the Saints. Right now Brees has 2,563 yards passing with 15 TDs and a QB rating of 101.6. Brees is on pace for 5,126 yards and 30 TDs. Considering last years MVP Tom Brady threw 50 TDs and only 8 picks, Brees might not edge out Portis with the interceptions he has thrown, 7 so far.
3. Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner
When you though Warner would hang them up, he keeps coming back. Even with QB Matt Leinart waiting in the wings, Warner thought he could still be a starting QB in this league when people said he could not. Well he proved everyone wrong and is doing better than almost everyone this season. This season Warner has 2,089 yards passing and 14 TDs through 7 games. Yes Drew Brees is the number one passer in the league right now, but with a bye week this week, Warner can close the gap. Right now Kurt Warner is about 500 yards passing behind Brees, but only 1 TD and has a QB rating better than Brees at 102. Warner has only one game with less than 2 passing TDs. That was week one. Look for him to pass Brees in that category this week. I don't expect him to pass him in yards, but Warner is capable of putting up big numbers.
Those are my three picks for now. You can throw Chargers QB Phillip Rivers in there with his 19 TD passes, but if his team keeps losing he will not make it to MVP. Ones to watch are Titans RB LenDale White, with 10 rushing TD's, Chicago Bears rookie RB Matt Forte with 738 total yards and 6 TDs.
Long story short, my pick for NFL MVP right now is Clinton Portis. I like the kid, he runs hard and has the emotion his team needs. Also he has been my money maker in fantasy football, so keep it up Portis.
Everything Else
Offensive Rookie of the Year- Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte 738 total yards and 6 TDs
Defensive Rookie of the Year- Washington Redskins SS Chris Horton 37 tackles and 3 picks
Come Back Player of the Year- Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner
Coach of the Year- Tennessee Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher
