Stewart Downing Close to Joining Liverpool for £19 Million

Stewart Downing is reportedly following Ashley Young out of the Aston Villa door and heading for Liverpool. 

Liverpool agreed a fee of about £19 million with Aston Villa for Downing soon after new boss Alex McLeish had said he would try his best to keep the English winger. Young reportedly had a medical with Manchester United Wednesday and is expected to sign a deal by the end of the week. 

Downing will bring much-needed width to the Reds, and though Kenny Dalglish had reportedly been looking at cheaper options, Downing remained the No. 1 choice.

This could give McLeish the funds to try and lure Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia away from Sunderland and Liverpool, among others.
