The Iowa Hawkeyes (5-3, 2-2) are on a two-game winning streak heading into their game against the Fighting Illini of Illinois (4-4, 2-3). Both teams are looking to get a win and hopefully challenge for a top 25 spot in the near future.
Illinois has given up 215 points this season, nearly triple the amount the Hawkeyes have surrendered to opposing teams. However, the Illinois offense has scored 270 points, good for second in the Big Ten. Iowa's offense has been no slouch, scoring the third-most points per contest in the conference, and they are led by breakout Heisman candidate Shonn Greene.
Greene has led the Hawkeyes to a respectable 5-3 record, and the three losses the Hawkeyes have suffered have been by a combined total of nine points. The star runner has also not rushed for fewer than 100 yards in a game this season and doesn't figure to change that anytime soon.
Illinois has not been very consistent in stopping opposing running backs, and Greene may be the best they will face this entire season. That's a pretty bold statement in the Big Ten, but, hey, I'm a pretty bold guy.
Despite both of these teams being underachievers in a sense, I think this will be another great Big Ten match. The Hawkeyes defense has been terrific this season, and, if it can control the ground game, I see no reason why Iowa can't beat the Fighting Illini.
I think Iowa makes a statement that it is not going down without a fight and wins this game by way of a great defense and a hit-'em-in-the-mouth running game. What's new?
Iowa wins, 31-16, backed by three more Shonn Greene touchdowns, perhaps vaulting his name to be holding the trophy whose stance he so accurately duplicates in the article photo.
