Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy travel to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado for an important match with Gary Smith’s Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer play.
Depending on how the USA vs. Jamaica encounter in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals pans out on Sunday, this will be the last match the Galaxy will have without either their starting goalkeeper, Donovan Ricketts, or their top scorer, team captain Landon Donovan.
The Los Angeles Galaxy are currently 8-2-7 (31 points) and are currently the team at the top of the MLS overall table, though second-place FC Dallas has two games in hand. As for the Colorado Rapids, led by Jamie Smith, they are 5-3-7 (22 points) and are fourth in the MLS Western Conference.

No Landon Donovan? No Donovan Ricketts? No David Beckham? No problem for Bruce Arena’s men.
The defending MLS Supporters’ Shield Champions, the Los Angeles Galaxy, have secured their first victory of the month of June with an emphatic 3-1 victory over the defending MLS Cup Champions, the Colorado Rapids, on Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.
Drew Moor scored an own goal in the 26th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Juninho made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute with a blistering shot that hit the top left corner.
While Conor Casey did take one back in the 64th minute for the home side, LA took advantage of being a man up with Chad Barrett recording his fourth goal of the season in the 80th minute of play.
A full recap of this match will be posted on Bleacher Report and the View from Victoria Street.

Welcome back, Chad Barrett. Off the bench, he gets the delivery from Colorado native Todd Dunivant, and the Los Angeles Galaxy are up 3-1.
Previously, what seemed like a penalty by the Colorado Rapids fans in the 77th minute was actually a clean clearance by Sean Franklin on Omar Cummings.
A chance for Chris Birchall in the 79th minute was squandered, and the ensuing corner was swept away initially by Matt Pickens, but a breakdown in defense
Pablo Mastroeni was cautioned in 81st minute for unsportsmanlike behavior.

With the Colorado Rapids getting their rewards for putting on the pressure, they looked to build on their momentum with attempts at an equalizer. A chance for Juan Pablo Angel in the 69th minute had too much pace, resulting in an easy collection for Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
A dangerous free kick from the Rapids in the 72nd minute was blocked by Juninho, who has been stepping up his game. The young Brazilian from Sao Paulo was responsible for what is looking to be the game-winner if the result stands, although there is time remaining. Regardless, he has had a solid game in the midfield for LA.
But Caleb Folan got sent off for a very rough tackle on Juninho, meaning that Rapids were forced to play with 10 men.

It’s a new game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, apparently.
The Colorado Rapids’ Conor Casey took advantage of a poor clearance from the Los Angeles Galaxy’s Omar Gonzalez, and the defending MLS Cup champions now trail 2-1.
A corner in the 62nd minute from Wells Thompson was cleared by Todd Dunivant, forcing a Rapids throw. A shot in the 67th minute from jeff Larentowics hit the side netting.
With the goal, the Rapids will look to press for an equalizer as the second half continues. The Galaxy cannot sleep on defense this late in the game. They have been notorious for this the past several matches.

After 60 minutes, the Los Angeles Galaxy remain on top with a 2-0 lead over the Colorado Rapids.
A shot from Caleb Folan in the 48th minute sailed over the crossbar as the Rapids made an attempt at a comeback. In the 52nd minute, another sequence was squandered by a bad touch from Conor Casey. A shot for Pablo Mastroeni missed high in the 57th minute.
The Rapids have been having some trouble finding open space to make the final pass in their attacking third, and they must do something about this.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy have been generating their share of attempts on goal. A chance for Sean Franklin went by the wayside in the 52nd minute, and Juan Pablo Angel nearly notched his fourth of the year in the 53rd minute of play. Another opportunity for Angel failed to connect in the 59th minute.
For Los Angeles, the need to consolidate is strong because teams like Colorado have the skills to rally late. A third goal by Los Angeles is vital to their chances of victory.

An own goal from Drew Moor combined with a scorching shot from Juninho has given the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-0 lead heading into the break at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.
A corner from the Rapids’ Sanna Nyassi in the 44th minute was cleared by Juan Pablo Angel and Chris Birchall, and Omar Gonzalez also forced a touch from Conor Casey. A free kick from Juan Pablo Angel in stoppage time was easily deflected.
So far, Los Angeles have had decent possession, but will need to build on it because this is a Colorado team capable of coming back from a margin like this.

Juninho scored a blistering volley in the top left corner in the 42nd minute to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-0 lead.
In the 29th minute, a corner from Sanna Nyassi was cleared. In the 30th minute, Omar Gonzalez continued to frustrate the Rapids attack. A long cross from Chris Birchall in the 31st minute found no one in particular.
A shot from Kosuke Kimura in the 32nd minute found the reaching arms of Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders. Mike Magee had an attempt in the 33rd minute, but Matt Pickens was there to collect for Colorado.
Sanna Nyassi was given a yellow card in the 36th minute for a rough challenge on Todd Dunivant. A free kick by Juan Pablo Angel in the 37th minute was deflected for a corner, which was later broken up by Matt Pickens after Sanna Nyassi dispossession was disrupted.
A.J. DeLaGarza had to stop the counter from Nyassi in the 41st minute to force a corner, which was headed high by Moor.

The Los Angeles Galaxy have taken the lead, thanks to a sliding cross from Chris Birchall leading to an own goal by the Colorado Rapids's Drew Moor in the 26th minute of play. It looked to be illegal, but upon further review, it was still in play.
The Rapids continued to press in the first half as the Los Angeles Galaxy’s backline and goalkeeper Josh Saunders countered with their dispossession work. In the 19th minute, a shot from Rapids forward Conor Casey hit the side netting.
A chance for Mike Magee in the 21st minute was squandered due to a poor delivery by Birchall.
The Galaxy’s David Beckham had other obligations in Europe, and was unable to make the trip to Colorado.

Early in the first half, the Galaxy’s Omar Gonzalez was forced to do some work on the back line. The Colorado Rapids have been winning a majority of the possession as they look to come off to a fast start to begin the opening stanza.

On the other side of the country, the two Donovans keep watch over the action in Commerce City, Colorado. Los Angeles Galaxy team captain/midfielder Landon Donovan plays for the USA men’s national team. Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts plays for the Jamaican national team. Though they are allies in the blue, gold and while of the G’s, they will be on different sides tomorrow in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals.
“I wish them both the best,” Galaxy midfielder Mike Magee told MLSSoccer.com’s Luis Bueno. “Obviously I want the USA to win, but hopefully the USA wins 1-0 so D doesn’t get scored on too many times.”
“I’m sure they’ll have a laugh after the game, but during the game, I’m sure they’ll be serious because the semifinals are at stake,” midfielder Chris Birchall said. “It’s easy to switch off when the game’s going, but when there’s breaks in play and before and after the game, it’s always humorous to see a player you know so well, that you train with every day, and it’s two different nationalities.
"It’s two players who are playing great for their club team and representing their country.”
