Wimbledon 2011 Results Have Been Kind to Some, and Hard on Others
The Wimbledon Championships are nearing the end and most of the players that started off playing at the All England Club have already packed up and headed home, but a few remain with a chance at winning the 2011 Wimbledon Championship.
Here are five winners from the 2011 Wimbledon Championships:
1. Sabine Lisicki
There may not be a bigger winner than Lasicki at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships. At just 21 years of age, Lisicki is still alive and will face Maria Sharapova in the semifinals.
She defeated two top ten players in the world and has a chance to knock off a third in the semifinals. Lasicki is making her presence felt and her world ranking should greatly improve after this tournament.
2. Bernard Tomic
At just 18 years of age Tomic exploded onto the scene at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships and advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Novak Djokovic.
Tomic defeated the No. 5 player in the world, Robin Soderling, en route to the quarterfinals and proved that he is a rising star on the tennis scene.
3. Andy Murray
Andy Murray has coasted into the semifinals and has only dropped two sets during the entire tournament. He avoided a matchup with Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals and defeated Feliciano Lopez in straight sets.
Add that to the fact that Rafael Nadal has a bum foot and this may be Murray's best chance to break the British curse at the Old England Club.
4. Maria Sharapova
Maria Sharapova could not have asked for a better draw, she has avoided both of the Williams' sisters who were coming off injuries and the top two seeds in the tournament.
She will meet unseeded Sabine Lisicki in the semifinals for a chance to reach the Wimbledon final and win her first title at the Old England Club for the first time since 2004.
5. Novak Djokovic
With Roger Federer losing to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Djokovic is able to avoid a semifinal matchup against the Swiss star.
Djokovic lost to Federer at the French Open and while Tsonga will not be an easy matchup, Djokovic would prefer to face him than face the six-time Wimbledon Champion.
Here are five losers from the 2011 Wimbledon Championships:
1. Andy Roddick
The American has struggled mightily in major events since he lost the marathon match to Roger Federer in the final in 2009.
Roddick is quickly turning into a one-hit wonder, as his only major win came in the 2003 US Open. Unfortunately for Roddick he has run into a difficult era for tennis players not named Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer and this Wimbledon loss begin to spell out the end for Roddick.
2. Roger Federer
Roger Federer will not be moving up to the No. 1 or No. 2 spot in the world rankings after his loss to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals. While a quarterfinal appearance is not horrible, this marks the second straight year the six-time champion has lost in the quarterfinals.
Federer also lost a grand slam match when leading by two sets for the first time in his career. He was looking to tie Pete Sampras' record seven Wimbledon titles, but that did not happen and will only get tougher as these younger players continue to improve.
3. Caroline Wozniacki
Caroline Wozniacki entered Wimbledon as the No. 1 overall seed but found herself eliminated after losing to Dominika Cibulkova in the fourth round.
With the Williams' sisters coming into the tournament off of injuries this field was considered to be wide open and Wozniacki had a great chance to win.
4. Li Na
Li Na came off an impressive run at the French Open but she was unable to come away victorious at Wimbledon.
She was defeated in the second round to Sabine Lisicki who has continued her exceptional run all the way to the semifinals.
She is currently the No. 4 ranked player in the world, and losing so early in the tournament has to be considered a huge disappointment for the Chinese stat.
5. Serena Williams
Williams returned to Wimbledon as one of the favorites even though she was coming off of an injury. She advanced to the fourth round when she was eliminated by Marion Bartoli in straight sets.
Williams last won a Wimbledon title in 2009 and was hoping this year was the year that she could get back to the winner's circle.
