I Wish I Were Born 90 Years Ago

I, as many of you know, am a huge baseball fan. I love it. I watch baseball nowadays and am a huge fan of today's stars such as Evan Longoria, Albert Pujols, Dustin Pedroia, etc. However, I would prefer to be born in about 1900.

In 1900, baseball was first coming up as the national pastime. I would be able to appreciate the real ballplayers such as Christy Matthewson, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Three Finger Brown, Chief Bender. Not the so called "baseball players" such as Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Belle, etc. The ones who demand 10 million dollars or more a year and sometimes take themselves out of the lineup, shove secretaries to the ground, cough cough—MANNY

Is there anybody on this website who would not do anything to see Babe Ruth play? Or Lou Gehrig? Christy Matthewson? Anyone?

I love baseball and always will. I appreciate the players of nowadays. I even admire their skills. But their personalities, to be quite honest, are terrible. They beg for the big bucks and usually don't perform up to their capabilities. I don't care how good Manny is, he will never be worth more then 10 million dollars a year. No matter what he does, I don't care.

If you're a baseball fan, you'll know. Baseball back in the day was pure. They did it for the love of the game, not money, or even winning for that matter.

I'd do anything to see Chief Bender play. I'd grow up watching Chief Bender, Ty Cobb and Shoeless Joe Jackson play, be in my 30's, 40's and 50's seeing Lou Gehrig, Stan Musial and Satchel Paige play. I'd die watching Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Roberto Clemente play.

Any problem there? No.

Today, the typical baseball fan is a poser, in my opinion. They say they are huge baseball fans and they might be, but without the history of the game, they are really missing out. I'd do anything to get to see Babe Ruth play in the 1932 World Series and call his shot for 5 dollars. That would be fine with me. But, being an O's fan, I'm seeing the likes of Jamie Walker, Juan Castro, Kevin Millar, Luke Scott and George Sherrill blow games for the price of 25 bucks.

That's a tough decision.

If any baseball fan...No, real baseball fan can tell me they would rather pay more to see showboats act stupid than see the likes of The Babe, Ty Cobb, Three Finger Brown, Jimmie Foxx, Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and others play for less money, they are out of their minds.

In my opinion, the old player is 10 times smarter. The new player is more likely to hold out for one million more while the old timers made anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 dollars per year. Back then they had to have a real talent, not just hitting a baseball. In my opinion, Manny Ramirez couldn't survive in the world without baseball. He'd be a hobo.

If you can see Manny working with rational people in a normal environment, quit dreaming. I think that is the case for a lot of players now, except the ones who actually got their full education.

I do appreciate baseball and am not saying in any way I'd give paying attention to baseball up, but I wish I was born in 1900. I'd grow up watching Chief, Three Finger, Ty, The Babe, Double X, Wahoo Crawford, Zach Wheat, Cy and other Hall of Famers.

Think about that.
