US Open Golf 2011: Why We All Owe Rory McIlroy an Apology
McIlroy Silences Critics With Dominance on Sunday
Well, it's finally about to happen. Rory McIlroy will walk away from the 2011 U.S. Open as a champion and former choke artist. Given how he's dropped the latter title (at least for now), we all owe him a sincere apology.
Yesterday, opinions were swirling about how today would be the day of Rory Collapse 2.0, but the exact opposite happened. If anything, it was Rory Surge Part 1. If there are any more haters out there, they should emerge now.
Look at it this way. Rory McIlroy clearly worked on his game for this tournament. He never got cocky and kept his focus up until the very end. There is no way that anybody can catch up to him at this point, so all talk of him being a fluke or this being dumb luck should stop right now.
This young man deserves our sincerest congratulations and apologies for ever doubting him. His next hurdle is the British Open, where he will be playing in front of an even greater army of fans. Hopefully, for both his sake and theirs, he can be just as dominant at Royal St. George's as he was at Congressional.
