Strikeforce Heavyweight Tournament: Who Should Be The Favorite Between Barnett and Kharitonov?
Bleacher Report’s Blake Dreisbach:
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh Barnett (30-5) has been a top heavyweight for a very long time, and this is impressive considering how many heavyweights have gone off track since he became the UFC champion in 2002.
He continued his success with a victory over Brett “The Grim” Rogers, submitting the power-puncher with a second round arm-triangle choke.
Barnett now gets ready to face Russian fighter Sergei Kharitonov (18-4) in the semifinals. Kharitonov is coming off of a first-round knockout victory over Andrei Arlovski.
Barnett should be a solid favorite going into the bout. He has more ways to win, but Kharitonov is a serious striker and is fully capable of knocking anyone out with one punch.
Depending on where this fight takes place, it could be anyone’s fight. Barnett will probably shoot early, and if the fight hits the ground, it’s going to be the superior grappler in Barnett who wins. All he has to do is avoid the striking of Kharitonov, and it could be a quick night. Kharitonov is very durable too so it may go the distance.
