Strikeforce Heavyweight Tournament: Does Jorge Masvidal Deserve a Title Shot Versus Melendez?

 Bleacher Report’s Blake Dreisbach:

Lightweight fighter Jorge Masvidal (22-6) impressed fans with his thourough beating over former EliteXC Lightweight Champion KJ Noons (10-3) at last night’s Strikeforce event in Dallas, Texas. He won a unanimous decision after three rounds.

Noons has experience in kickboxing and boxing, but he was not able to stop the assault by Masvidal, who bloodied and bruised Noons’ face in the first round but could not finish.

Masvidal picked up the second consecutive victory since losing a close decision to Paul Daley last year. He also defeated Billy Evangelista earlier this year.

Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez (19-2) is a top 10 lightweight and has defeated every opponent he has faced. He won the lightweight championship when he defeated Josh Thompson in 2009 and defended it twice against Shinya Aoki and Tatsuya Kawajiri.

Melendez can’t sit on the shelves for too long, and “Gamebred” offers a very exciting fight for fans if he gets the shot at “El Nino.”

The fight could happen before the end of the year, and a fall date is the most likely avenue the Strikeforce matchmaker will take.
