Kim Clijsters: With Clijsters out at Wimbledon, Who’s the Favorite?
Kim Clijsters is Out at Wimbledon, so Who’s the Favorite now?
One of the favorites coming into this year’s Wimbledon was women’s star Kim Clijsters, but she won’t be taking home the top prize this year.
Clijsters has pulled out of the tournament citing a foot injury, and the field for the tournament is even more of a crapshoot than before.
While she wouldn’t have been the top seed, Clijsters won the Australian Open and had a good show in the French Open at Roland Garros.
Clijsters told the Belleville News Democrat:
At this moment I feel frustrated that it has to happen now before one of my favorite tournaments. I've always enjoyed being a part of the Wimbledon atmosphere but I have no other choice now but to rest, recover and to not play tennis for a few weeks.
Coming into the tournament, Clijsters was to be seeded at No. 2, and she was going to be one of the strongest bets to be there during the Finals.
The story of her ankle injury goes back to April when she was dancing at her cousin’s wedding, and she injured it on the dance floor.
This is a bad sign for Clijsters because that injury was over two months ago, and it still hasn’t healed enough to play. I hope that this won’t become one of those lingering injuries that plagues her career and affects her legacy.
