NBA Rumors: Possible Landing Spots for Denver Nuggets Free Agent Nene
NBA rumors around Nene find multiple options for the free agent.
Nene has been on the Nuggets for his entire eight-year NBA career and has decided to test free agency. Coming off a year in which he put up 14.5 points, 7.6 rebounds on a NBA league leading 61.5 shooting percentage—he is an incredibly efficient player around the basket that can run and rebound...somewhat of a rarity in today's game.
He decided to exercise the player option in his deal to forgo the final year of a contract that was paying him $11.3M a year. Clearly he made the move in order to secure a fatter paycheck. Kurt Helin of probasketballtalk.com talks about the potential destinations for the 28-year old from Brazil:
Denver still has the home team advantage, even if he opted out and expressed frustration that the team did not come through with an extension. Whatever the new CBA looks like, you can bet there will be some kind of advantage for players who sign with their current team. He’s going to be a max guy. Don’t be shocked if a team like Indiana makes a big move for him.
If Indiana made the move, it would be a complete shocker. One of the likely candidates to court his services are the Golden St. Warriors. They are under a new regime with Mark Jackson and Jerry West and have made it clear changes will be made.
It seems as if Nene is tired of ground hogs day in Denver. Year-after-year they play exceedingly well during the regular season yet always flame-out in the first round of the postseason. A mutual break-up may be the best option for both parties at this point.
An option could be the LA Clippers. Losing DeAndre Jordan to free agency not only opens up cap space—but a power forward position as well. Then again, owner Donald Sterling rarely spends money and is likely not going to give him a near-max contract.
Don't count out the New Jersey Nets, Houston Rockets and the Philadelphia 76ers as well (if they unload Elton Brand).
As soon as the lockout is over Nene is going to have plenty of options...it's still unclear as to what Nene thinks his best one is.
