New York Yankees: Derek Jeter Inches Closer to 3,000 Hits with 2 Singles Sunday
Derek Jeter inched closer to career hit No. 3,000 with a pair of singles on Sunday afternoon against the Cleveland Indians.
Jeter, currently 28th all-time on the career hits list, had a bloop single against Josh Tomlin in his third at-bat.The single scored Brett Gardner who had doubled on at-bat earlier.
Jeter then added a bouncing single right back up the middle in the bottom of the eighth inning against Chad Durbin before being removed from the game for a pinch runner.
Already the franchise hits leader, Jeter is looking to become the first player to achieve 3,000 career hits all as a member of the Yankees organization.
He won't pass another player on the all-time list until he reaches hit No. 3,001. His 3,000th will tie Roberto Clemente on the career list.
Jeter now sits just seven hits shy of the milestone. The Yankees have five games remaining on the current homestand, leaving the possibility that he will reach the historic milestone in front of a packed Yankees Stadium crowd.
