2011 NBA Mock Draft Finds Michigan's Darius Morris Underrated
Darius Morris may be the most underrated point guard in the entire draft. The legitimate 6’5” prospect out of Michigan has the skills of an old-school pass-first point guard that seems to have fallen out of favor in the NBA for some inexplicable reason.
Teams are constantly on the lookout for the next Derrick Rose, a ball hogging point guard who turns the ball over too much and is not a great passer. Players like Rose get their assists by making simple passes and for some reason the NBA chooses to reward players who wildly careen towards the hoop with foul calls. This then leads to open shooters on the perimeter who can be hit with an easy pass.
Darius Morris is a point guard that is built more out of the Steve Nash, Rajon Rondo mold that has become more rare in recent prospects. He has an amazing court vision and a knack for finding a teammate in position to score. The one knock on his game now is his outside shooting ability and is the reason why he is projected to fall out of the lottery.
These flaws sound very familiar to the ones that Rajon Rondo received coming out of college and also still plague him today. But Rondo has steadily improved his mid range game and has become one of the NBA’s elite passers.
When all is said and done, Darius Morris may be the best point guard to come out of this draft. He will be taken in the same area that Nash and Rondo fell to because of perceived weakness in their game by scouts. He has a chance to prove them wrong and succeed by being a traditional pass first point guard that is proven to win games at the next level.
