Erik Bedard Red Sox: Will Bedard Trade Help Bo Sox Conquer AL East
The Seattle Mariners may have been instrumental in helping yet another team to victory. The Boston Red Sox landed Erik Bedard in a three-way trade with the Mariners and Dodgers.
Bedard may be 4-7, but he's 4-7 on the Mariners. He's got a 3.45 ERA and could be just the guy to help the Red Sox hold off the Yankees down the stretch. The Red Sox are currently two games up on the Yankees and miles ahead of the rest of the division.
Bedard gives them yet another pitcher in the rotation and could be a difference maker once they get into the thick of the AL East race.
The Red Sox also managed to swing Josh Fields and didn't deal away anything but prospects. They parted ways with future talent, but took huge strides in adding depth to their rotation.
Bedard to the Red Sox comes as somewhat of a surprise, as the Cardinals seemed as though they may be the favorite to make a play for him.
In the end it was the Red Sox who were able to bring in Bedard, who is clearly the biggest winner of this entire trade. Bedard is going from the bottom of the AL West to the top of the AL East. The 20-win jump has to be exciting for both he and Fields.
Now they get a chance to contribute to a contender and he probably won't be served up a loss if he puts forth a good outing.
His 4-7 record is sure to improve, given the talent around him. This was a great move by the Red Sox and they have to be feeling great about getting a deal done, even if it did come uncomfortably close to the deadline.
Trades just before the deadline rarely have a huge impact, but the Red Sox don't need a player who is going to have a huge impact. They need a guy in the bullpen who can help them remain atop the division. Bedard could very well be that guy.
