Tennessee Football: AD Mike Hamilton Calls It Quits

John WhiteCorrespondent IIIJune 7, 2011

University of Tennessee President Joe DiPietro informed the school board of trustees by email this morning that athletic director Mike Hamilton had resigned from his position.

At this point nothing has been released as to the reason of his sudden resignation, but with all of the mess left behind by his self-appointed coaches in former head football coach Lane Kiffin, and head basketball coach Bruce Pearl it gives an apparent clue.

Hamilton was supposed to appear in front of the NCAA Infractions Committee within a matter of days on the sins left by his hires.

For many this has been a long time coming, since his questionable methods of dismissal for former Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer.

Then the abrupt absconding of Lane Kiffin just as signing approached in 2010. And one year later things quickly went downhill when things began to surface around Pearl's recruiting practices. Pearl was later fired amid protests of angry Vol fans.

He was later criticized for his hiring of an unproven coach in Derek Dooley, but the effect was softened by Dooley's southern charm and football pedigree.

Questions and rumors will quickly build as speculation swirls around who will be the next AD.

There has already been a cry for bringing in Phillip Fulmer to run the athletics position, but there is also a large group that would like to see Lady Vols head basketball coach Pat Summit take the job. There will be no shortage of rumors when the job search begins.

A news conference has been scheduled for 11:00 AM.
