Belmont Stakes 2011: Wet Track Contender Ruler on Ice Has 42-1 Odds
Belmont Stakes 2011 Sees Ruler on Ice Drop in Odds Despite Wet Track Record
Coming into Saturday's Belmont Stakes, I would be the first to admit that taking a chance on Ruler on Ice would be a longshot.
But things have changed.
Ruler on Ice, despite having the most experience and success on wet tracks, dropped from a 20-1 darkhorse on Friday to a 42-1 underdog on Saturday morning.
Not only is Ruler on Ice apparently comfortable with bad weather conditions, he also has the pedigree to race better at Belmont Park.
Noted PreGame.com:
Love the 42-1 odds on a horse that is solid at longer distances. In two of his three past three races he was making a late surge so the 1-1/2 mile dirt track could bode well.

If you are looking to bet on a longshot on Saturday, Ruler on Ice might be your best bet. Even with a small bet, you could come away a huge winner.
Ruler on Ice finished third in the Sunland Derby in March, then ran second in the Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico.
Said Ruler on Ice trainer Kelly Breen, via MyCentralJersey.com:
“When you’re running against the top horses, it’s tough to say he’ll run a phenomenal race. The mile-and-a-half distance is a distance horses generally don’t do. But at this distance, he never seems to recede during the stretch, so it appears he doesn’t mind running this distance.”
Ruler on Ice may not be the darkhorse oddsmakers have predicated.
One thing's for sure: Considering the circumstances, he's certainly not a 42-1 darkhorse.
Update: Ruler on Ice has risen to 24-1 odds.
