The designated hitter rule has been controversial since the American League adopted it in 1973.

Some people like the DH, while some people, like me, don't. Some people think the rule should be the same in both leagues, while some people, like me, think it's okay the way it is.

Here's my idea.

Why not have a designated hitter, but still have the pitcher bat?

Ten men in the lineup.

The advantage of the designated hitter is that fans get to see great hitters who don't have a defensive position, such as David Ortiz of the Red Sox, play on a daily basis.

The advantage of not having the designated hitter is that it makes the game more interesting by forcing the manager to decide what to do when his weak-hitting pitcher comes to bat. Pinch hit for him? Have him bunt? Have him swing away?

Having the pitcher bat but still having the DH would give fans the best of both worlds.

What could be better?
