UFC 130 Results: Roy Nelson vs. Frank Mir, Rd. 1
Frank Mir and Roy Nelson couldn't be in starker contrast.
Mir is chiseled, the consummate fighter on the surface and appears to be very image conscious while Roy Nelson is, ahem, NOT chiseled, you wouldn't pick him as a fighter except possibly in the drunken bar variety and couldn't give a flip about his image—he entered an enormous bout wearing a bizarre mullet pony tail with Weird Al Yankovic's "Fat" roaring in the background.
Yep, that about sums it up.
Anyway, they clinch up against the cage almost immediately and Frank delivers a few knees to Roy's considerable gut, but I'm not sure he even feels those.
Mir is the more varied striker to start the bout, but Roy is calmly covering up and deflecting the kicks and punches while landing some big shots of his own. A looping right hand clubs Mir and spins him around, but he's back on the assault quickly.
Big Country's granite chin is getting another test in the form of Frank Mir knees and, so far, it's holding up much like it did against Junior dos Santos. Still, that's not a great recipe for success so Nelson changes it up.
Roy Nelson actually just attempted a head kick; I think, tough to tell because it barely got over Mir's waist. Then another right hook slams into Mir's cranium, but Frank's the one showing a good beard now as he's right back after Roy.
Gorgeous trip from Frank plants Nelson on the ground before the resume the standup to close out the 10-9 round for Mir.
