UFC 130 Results: Brian Stann vs. Jorge Santiago, Rd. 1
The MGM Grand Garden Arena immediately justifies Wanderlei Silva's concerns as Stann gets an ear-shattering welcome as soon as he steps in the Octagon. Meanwhile, Santiago gets booed when he's announced like he stole something from everyone in the crowd.
Then the "USA, USA" chants start up inside of 20 seconds.
So we know where the crowd lies.
Both men are feeling each other out until a leg kick lands from the All-American and sparks the striking in earnest. A flurry of punches from Stann stops Santiago in his tracks and then another thwacking leg kick plants the Sandman on the ground. Brian wants no part of him there so they're back standing where some brief exchanges unfold and culminate in yet another right leg kick that knocks the Sandman off his axis.
Yet another "USA, USA" chant is born and dies quicker than the first.
But it might've done the trick nonetheless as Stann floors Santiago with a big left hook and then starts bombing away on his prone opponent. Fist after fist lands, but Jorge seems to have recovered after weathering the storm.
Granted, the Brazilian's still absorbing punishment, but the finish no longer looks imminent and it's not as Stann lets Santiago stand up before the final bell. Call it 10-9 for Brian Stann.
