Mike Singletary was known as "The Heart of the Defense" during the glory days of "The Monsters of the Midway." Some of us remember his intimidating stare and how he dominated his position. Off the field he was, and still is, a good man.
He has helped in many charity organizations. And, with his knowledge and leadership, he has climbed the ranks to be a coach in the NFL.
The horrible start to the 49ers' season was a gold mine in disguise. Nolan's firing unearthed the man who projected fear deep into the heart of every team he played against.
Singletary was a gentleman in his glory just as much as he was a gentleman in his defeat. With Singletary at the helm, his attitude will be contagious among the 49ers, and they will be more unified because of it.
Many critics might say that he isn't ready to be head coach.
Well, in my opinion, I think you will see the same grit, guts, and leadership that was displayed by Ditka. My prediction is that not only will Singletary be a great coach, but he will be a better coach than Ditka. Why? Because unlike Ditka he will put his team in the spotlight and be a quiet leader with a thunderous influence among his players.
Soon, very soon, Singletary will transform this team. We will see leaders born and show boats die. We will see smart calls on offense and gutsy defensive schemes that will leave opposing QB's second guessing their choice to play in the NFL. Sports writers alike will be scrambling to find a nickname for this new defense in red and gold.
I can't wait to see.
